Factorio: Importing & Using Blueprints
Blueprints are the DNA of any mega-base. In Factorio Multiplayer, managing blueprints can be slightly confusing because there are two libraries: your Personal library (stored on your PC) and the Game library (stored on the server).
1. The Blueprint String
Blueprints are shared as long text strings (base64 encoded JSON). You can copy these from websites and paste them directly into your game.
2. My Blueprints (B)
Press B to open your library. Items in the "My Blueprints" tab stay with you across all servers. Items in the "Game Blueprints" tab are shared with everyone on the current server.
3. Research Requirement
In the vanilla game, you obtain the Blueprint Tool automatically early on (unlocking Automation), but you can use the "Import String" button from the shortcut bar immediately.
How to Import a Blueprint String
- Find a blueprint on a site like FactorioPrints or Factorio School.
- Click Copy String on the website.
- In-game, look at your Shortcut Bar (bottom right, near the toolbelt).
- Click the Import String button (icon looks like a grey square with an arrow).
- Paste the string with
Ctrl + V. - Click Import. The blueprint is now on your cursor "ghost".
- Click anywhere in the world or in your Inventory to place it down.
Sharing Blueprints with Server Players
If you want to give a blueprint to your friend on the server:
- Open your Library (B).
- Drag the blueprint from your "My Blueprints" tab to the Game Blueprints tab.
- Now, any other player on the server can open their library, look at the Game Blueprints tab, and make a copy of it.
Troubleshooting
- Mod Missing: The blueprint uses modded items (e.g., Krastorio 2) that are not installed on the server.
- Tech Locked: You haven't researched the item yet. Construction bots will not build items you haven't unlocked.
Pro Tip: Use "Blueprint Books" to organize dozens of related prints (e.g., "Solar Array Book"). You can import an entire book as a single string!
