Enshrouded: Forging the Path - Dedicated Server Admin Guide - Enshrouded Wiki

Forging the Path — What Dedicated Server Admins Must Know

Forging the Path launched on April 21, 2026 as the final major Early Access update before Enshrouded's 1.0 release in Autumn 2026. It's the deepest systems overhaul the game has seen, touching combat, progression, gear, and social features. Here's everything that affects your dedicated server and your players.

Good news first: This update requires no changes to your enshrouded_server.json config file. No new keys, no new ports, no migration required. Existing servers carry over fully.

Skill Tree Reset — Communicate This to Your Players

This is the most disruptive change for established servers. When a player with an existing character loads into your world for the first time after the update, their skill tree is automatically reset and all skill points are refunded.

This is intentional — Keen Games has restructured the skill tree significantly, and many skills have been upgraded or reworked. Players will need to reallocate their points in the new tree.

What to do as a server admin:

  • Announce the reset before your next restart — players should know their build will change
  • The reset is one-time per character — subsequent logins won't trigger another reset
  • No skill points are lost; the full allocation is refunded and ready to spend
  • New players starting after the update will use the redesigned tree from the start

Gear Upgrade System (Runes)

The update introduces a rune-based gear upgrade system. Existing equipment on your server is automatically converted to the new upgradable format when the world loads after the update — no manual intervention needed.

What can now be upgraded with runes:

  • Armors and shields
  • Wards and rings
  • Pickaxes and wood-chopping axes

Players should not discard pre-update gear — it converts to upgradable versions and may have sentimental or endgame value. Pass this along before the update lands.

Combat Overhaul — Co-op Balance Impact

Forging the Path rewires how combat works. The key changes for multiplayer:

  • Focus resource: A new resource bar powers weapon special abilities. Combat pacing changes — players who relied on spam attacks will need to adapt
  • Hold-to-charge heavy attacks: Two-handed weapons now have reworked attack chains with charge mechanics
  • Enemy awareness: Upgraded AI makes Shroud creatures more reactive. Group pulls in dungeons are more dangerous
  • Skill upgrades: Skills can now be upgraded individually, shifting endgame build depth

On 16-player servers, the increased combat intensity may surface performance stress that wasn't visible before. Watch server tick logs during the first few hours after updating.

Adventure Sharing — Server Storage Note

The first version of Adventure Sharing is included in this update. Players can package and share world states. This feature is primarily client-side, but note:

  • Worlds with extensive Adventure Sharing content will have larger save file sizes
  • Enable incremental backups if you're not already — see our backup guide
  • The feature focuses on social sharing; it doesn't change how the dedicated server handles normal play sessions

No Configuration Changes Required

To be explicit about what has not changed:

  • No new keys in enshrouded_server.json
  • No port changes
  • No new command-line arguments
  • No save file migration needed
  • Voice/text chat settings introduced in Update 5 remain the same

Update your server via SteamCMD:

steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2278520 validate +quit

Then restart the service. The world will load and handle all internal migrations automatically on first boot.

Roadmap: Enshrouded 1.0 — Autumn 2026

Forging the Path is the last Early Access update. The next major milestone is the full 1.0 release, planned for Autumn 2026, which also brings the game to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with full crossplay.

Prepare your server for 1.0: Now is a good time to review world save health, clear old player data for inactive accounts, and ensure your hardware meets the upgraded requirements. See our 1.0 launch prep guide.
