Mindustry Mobile and PC Crossplay Guide

Mindustry Mobile and PC Crossplay

Mindustry can work across desktop and mobile, but crossplay only feels reliable when the server build, client version, and active content all line up. Most "crossplay is broken" reports are actually version drift or content mismatch problems.

1. Version parity matters more on mobile

Desktop players can often update immediately, while App Store and Play Store rollouts may lag behind. If the server moves to a newer build before mobile stores catch up, mobile players will hit join failures even though the server itself is healthy.

  • Keep the server on a build all target platforms can actually install.
  • Avoid rushing updates if your community includes iOS or Android players.
  • Pin the server version until the slowest platform catches up.

2. Mods and plugins are where crossplay usually breaks

Crossplay is simplest on a mostly vanilla server. Every added plugin, content mod, or overhaul raises the compatibility burden.

  • Server-side administration plugins are usually safer than content mods that alter gameplay assets.
  • If the server requires content the mobile client does not have, joins will fail.
  • When debugging, strip the server back to vanilla first and add content back one piece at a time.

3. Keep maps and rules conservative for mixed-platform groups

Even when players can all connect, the session may still feel bad if the map or ruleset is tuned only for keyboard-and-mouse public play. Large factories, heavy logic usage, and busy public maps are more punishing on mobile hardware.

  • Use curated maps instead of the heaviest community builds.
  • Prefer clear rules and shorter rotations for mixed mobile/PC communities.
  • Be cautious with heavily modded public servers if mobile support matters.

4. Crossplay troubleshooting checklist

  1. Confirm the server build matches the client build on every target platform.
  2. Temporarily disable optional mods and plugins to isolate content mismatches.
  3. Verify the game port is reachable and that the issue is not just a network timeout.
  4. Retest on a clean vanilla map.
  5. Only reintroduce plugins, custom content, and larger maps after a clean baseline works.

5. Best operator practice

If mobile support is important, treat updates like a release process: pin a stable version, watch the store rollout, and update the server intentionally instead of instantly. That discipline prevents most desktop/mobile split failures.
