Project Zomboid: Farming, Trapping & Animal Husbandry
Once the water and electricity shut off, your survival depends on your ability to produce your own food. While looting can sustain you for months, true long-term survival requires a mastery of the earth and the animals that inhabit it.
1. Advanced Farming
Farming in Project Zomboid is more about disease management than just planting seeds.
- Crop Choice: Cabbage is the highest calorie crop; Potatoes last the longest in storage.
- Sowing: Space your furrows with at least one empty tile between them. This prevents Blight or Mildew from spreading through your entire crop.
- Build 42 Update: Farming now includes realistic growing seasons and pests like slugs and snails that can destroy your harvest if left unchecked.
2. Trapping for Protein
You cannot survive on vegetables alone. Trapping provides essential proteins to maintain your weight.
- The 75-Tile Rule: You must be at least 75 tiles away from your traps for anything to be caught. Animals are scared of your scent!
- Best Locations: "Deep Woods" has the highest success rate for Rabbits and Squirrels.
- Baiting: Always use Fresh vegetables (Carrots for rabbits, Cabbage for squirrels) to increase trap efficiency.
3. New: Animal Husbandry (Build 42)
Build 42 introduces the ability to capture and breed livestock. This is the ultimate end-game goal for any survivor community.
| Animal | Primary Resource | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken | Eggs / Meat | Low (Requires small coop) |
| Sheep | Wool / Leather | Medium (Requires fencing) |
| Cow | Milk / Fertilizer | High (High food/water demand) |
SEO Survival Tip: Selective breeding is key. In Build 42, animals have a genetics system. Breeding your healthiest stock will lead to higher milk yields and faster-growing offspring, making your base significantly more efficient.
