Project Zomboid Roadmap 2026 — Build 42, B43 & Beyond
Project Zomboid has been in development for over a decade and The Indie Stone has continued shipping major builds rather than calling the game "done". Build 42 is the current focus heading through 2026, with B43 and beyond on the long horizon. This page tracks what's confirmed, what's in beta, and what's likely.
Where the game is now
Build 42 is the major in-development branch — the largest single update The Indie Stone has shipped in years. It's been rolling out across the unstable and beta branches, with stable adoption progressing through 2026.
What's in B42
Animals (livestock and wildlife), basements, expanded crafting, new map content, lighting overhaul, and dozens of long-asked QoL features.
The cadence
The Indie Stone publishes "Thursdoid" dev blogs most weeks describing what's in progress. Major builds arrive every 1–3 years; smaller patches and beta-branch updates more often.
Build 42 — What's Confirmed
B42 has been The Indie Stone's headline focus through the latter part of the development cycle. Major systems they've described in dev blogs and beta releases:
- Animals. Livestock farming (chickens, cows, pigs) and wildlife (deer, wolves, etc.). Adds a meaningful protein/food chain beyond canned goods.
- Basements. Underground building tier — significant since the engine wasn't designed for vertical depth originally.
- Expanded crafting. More recipes, more workstations, deeper progression.
- Map content additions. New POIs, towns, and biome variation.
- Lighting and rendering overhaul. A long-running engine modernization that touches almost every visual aspect of the game.
- Performance and engine improvements. Various optimizations baked into the B42 work.
Some of the above is in unstable / beta branches at any given time, with stable promotion happening as bugs are squashed.
The Stable / Unstable Split
Project Zomboid uses Steam's beta-branch system. The standard branches:
- Default (stable) — what most players are on. Last fully-stable release that The Indie Stone has signed off on.
- b42multiplayer or "Unstable" — the current development branch with new B42 features. Used by mod authors, server hosts testing changes, and the brave.
- Other named branches appear and disappear for specific test cycles.
Server hosts: don't run the unstable branch in production unless you're explicitly opting into the beta with your community. Mod compatibility breaks frequently on unstable.
Looking Past B42 (B43 and Beyond)
The Indie Stone has historically not pre-committed to specific B43 contents while B42 is still in flight. Themes mentioned in Thursdoids and community AMAs:
- NPCs. The long-running "where are the AI survivors" question. NPCs have been on the roadmap conceptually for years and remain the single biggest community ask.
- More map. Continued expansion of the Knox Country map and surrounding areas.
- Engine modernization continued. Lighting/rendering/animation systems progressively migrate toward a modern stack.
- Multiplayer scaling. Larger persistent servers, better moderation tooling, anti-griefing.
Speculation note: "B43 will have NPCs in 2026" is community wishful thinking, not a confirmed commitment. Don't plan a server community around it until The Indie Stone formally announces.
Multiplayer and Dedicated Server Outlook
- Dedicated server stability in B42 has been a major focus — long-running persistent servers tend to surface bugs that single-player doesn't.
- Larger player counts are an ongoing community ask; The Indie Stone has acknowledged but not committed to specific increases.
- Mod ecosystem continues to be central. Workshop mods often outpace base-game features (zoo animals before B42 livestock, advanced vehicles, custom maps like Bedford Falls / Louisville Plus / Raven Creek).
