Multi-Hit Mechanics Guide

Project Zomboid Multi-Hit Mechanics

Multi-Hit is a combat setting that allows a single swing of a melee weapon to strike multiple zombies simultaneously. While disabled in "Apocalypse" mode for realism, it is the default for "Survivor" mode and is highly popular on multiplayer servers to manage large hordes.

How it Works

When Multi-Hit is enabled, weapons have a hidden "Max Hit" value (usually 2 or 3). If multiple zombies are within your weapon's reach and your attack arc, they will all take damage and knockback.

  • Blunt Weapons: Generally have higher multi-hit potential and higher knockback, making them perfect for crowd control.
  • Bladed Weapons: Use multi-hit to thin out lines, but often have a lower hit cap than heavy blunt tools.
  • Short Blunt/Blade: Many small weapons (like knives) still only hit one target even if Multi-Hit is ON.

Build 42 Balance: Muscle Strain

In the latest Build 42 update, Multi-Hit has been rebalanced with the Muscle Strain mechanic. While you can hit more zombies, it comes at a physical cost:

Factor Impact on Combat
Exertion Every swing now drains endurance faster. Hitting 3 zombies creates more "strain" than hitting 1.
Strength Skill A player with Level 10 Strength experiences ~50% less strain, allowing them to swing for much longer.
Weapon Skill Higher skills increase attack speed and critical chance, meaning you need fewer hits to kill, which saves endurance.

How to Enable on Your Server

Multi-Hit is a Sandbox Setting. It cannot be changed while the server is running without a restart (unless using specific admin mods).

  1. Stop your server.
  2. Locate your sandbox configuration file (usually servertest_SandboxVars.lua).
  3. Find the variable MultiHitZombies.
  4. Set it to true.
  5. Restart the server.

Tactical Tips

  • Targeting Bug (B42): Be aware that in Build 42, there is a known "targeting bug" where attacks can sometimes phase through the front zombie and hit a backline zombie. Use the green "Outline" (Settings -> Display -> Aim Outline) to confirm your hits.
  • Fence Fighting: Even with Multi-Hit ON, using a fence to trip zombies remains the safest way to clear a horde. Tripped zombies can still be hit in groups while on the ground.
  • Overconfidence: Multi-hit makes you feel invincible, but reaching the "Exhausted" moodle (due to muscle strain) will reduce your damage by 90%, turning a 1-hit kill into a 10-hit struggle. Watch your endurance!
