Valheim: Downloading & Backing Up Your World

Whether you want to play your server's world in singleplayer, test a major base build locally, or simply keep a secure backup of your progress, downloading your world files is a simple process. Valheim worlds consist of two distinct files that must always be kept together.

1. The .DB File

This is the "Database" file. it contains every structure you've built, every item in your chests, and the current state of the terrain. it is usually the larger of the two files.

2. The .FWL File

This is the "Metadata" file. It contains the world seed, the world name, and the versioning information required for the game to recognize the world in the menu.

3. Directory Path

On a dedicated server, these files are hidden in the .config folder, which is different from the main game installation directory.

How to Download Your World Files

  1. Navigate to your Supercraft Panel and Stop the server (this ensures the files aren't being written to during the download).
  2. Open the File Manager.
  3. Go to the following directory: /.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local/.
  4. Locate the files matching your World Name (found in Basic Server Settings).
    • Example: MyWorld.db and MyWorld.fwl
  5. Right-click each file and select Download.

How to Play Locally (Singleplayer)

To use the downloaded world on your own computer:

  1. Press Win + R on your keyboard and type %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local\.
  2. Paste the .db and .fwl files into this folder.
  3. Launch Valheim, and your server's world will now appear in your "Start Game" list!

Steam Cloud Warning: If you use Steam Cloud for your saves, the folder path may be different (.../Valheim/worlds/). If the game doesn't see your world in worlds_local, try moving them to worlds and restarting the game.
