Vintage Story 1.22: Rivers, Rapids, and Rafts
The long-awaited Update 1.22 (2026) fundamentally changed world generation by introducing flowing rivers and procedural currents. Water is no longer valid just static; it's a highway.
River Mechanics
Unlike standard lakes, Rivers in 1.22 have directional flow.
- Current Strength: Varies by width and incline. Narrow sections flow faster.
- Waterfalls: Rivers can now cascade down elevations. Do not attempt to take a basic raft down a waterfall!
- Erosion: River banks generate with gravel and clay deposits more frequently.
Building Your First Boat
Swimming consumes massive stamina. To travel, you need a vessel. 1.22 introduced a new modular boat system.
1. The Log Raft (Tier 1)
Best for short crossings or calm lakes.
- Crafting: 9 Logs + 4 Vines (In-world crafting: Tie logs together).
- Speed: Slow.
- Durability: Breaks upon hitting rocks at high speed.
2. The Dugout Canoe (Tier 2)
The standard exploration vessel.
- Crafting: Use a Chisel and Adze on a Debarked Log placed horizontally. You must carve out the interior voxel-by-voxel.
- Speed: Medium. Affected by paddling rhythm.
- Capacity: Holds 1 Player + 1 Chest/Passenger.
River Navigation Tips
๐ฃ Fighting the Current
Paddling upstream takes 2x Stamina. It is often faster to portage (carry) your canoe on land around rapids.
โ Anchoring
Always tie your boat to a fence post or tree using Rope. Unsecured boats will float away downstream while you sleep!
๐ฃ Fishing Revamp
Fish now congregate in eddies (calm water behind rocks). Casting into fast current will snap your line.
Procedural Dungeons
Rivers are often the entry points to the new Flooded Caves.
- Look for rivers disappearing into cliff faces.
- These caves contain unique loot but require a Torch Holder attached to your boat to navigate.
- Beware of Drifters that can now swim/float in water!
