Hytale Update 4: Voice Chat, 500 New Blocks & What Servers Need to Know
Update 4 launched on March 26, 2026, marking the fourth major content patch since Hytale's Early Access debut in January. This is the biggest content drop yet — over 500 new blocks, proximity voice chat, an emote wheel, and the Revolve creative tool. For server admins, the voice chat system and expanded block palette introduce new configuration options and performance considerations.
Update required: Both the client and dedicated server must be on Update 4. Mismatched versions will reject connections. If your server uses the UpdateModule core plugin, it handles this automatically.
What's New in Update 4
| Feature | Details | Server Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Proximity Voice Chat | Spatial audio with distance attenuation, reverb, and noise suppression | New bandwidth and config requirements |
| 500+ New Blocks | Limestone, chalk, slate sets; improved fence/railing connections | Larger world saves, slightly higher memory |
| Emote Wheel | Looping animations: Chicken, Laugh, Punch, and more | Minimal — client-driven animations |
| Revolve Tool | Creative tool for rotational copy/paste (towers, patterns) | Can spike server load during large revolve operations |
| 7 New Hairstyles | Character customization expansion | None — client cosmetic only |
Proximity Voice Chat: Server Configuration
Voice chat is the headline feature of Update 4. It uses spatial audio where players hear others based on distance, with environmental reverb that changes based on surroundings (caves echo, open fields are clear).
Key Settings
- Voice chat is optional — players can use voice activation or push-to-talk, or disable it entirely
- Parental controls restrict voice chat on child accounts automatically
- Server admins can disable voice chat server-wide via the server configuration if needed for roleplay or moderated environments
Bandwidth Considerations
Voice data is streamed peer-to-peer between nearby players, but the server still handles proximity calculations. On a 50+ player server, expect a modest increase in CPU usage for the spatial proximity checks. Monitor your server's tick rate after the update and consider adjusting player limits if you see degradation.
Admin tip: For heavily moderated servers (RP communities, kid-friendly environments), disable voice chat server-side and use your existing Discord/TeamSpeak setup instead. This eliminates the moderation burden of in-game voice.
500+ New Blocks: What This Means for Servers
About half of the new blocks are available through crafting and exploration; the other half are Creative Inventory exclusives. The new block sets include:
- Limestone, chalk, and slate material families
- Improved fence connection behavior (fences now snap to adjacent blocks)
- New decorative blocks for interior building
Performance Impact
More block variety means players will build more complex structures. This can increase:
- World save size — expect 10–20% larger saves on creative-focused servers
- Chunk loading memory — marginally higher due to expanded block ID palette
Admin tip: If you run a creative/building server, review your backup schedule. Larger world files mean backups take longer and consume more storage. The built-in backup system (hourly, 24 max) remains the recommended default.
Revolve Tool: Creative Server Warning
The new Revolve creative tool lets players paste rotational copies of a selection around a center point. This is powerful for symmetrical builds (circular towers, decorative rings) but can generate significant block placement load when used with large selections at high rotation counts.
Creative server admins: A player revolving a 500-block selection 12 times places 6,000 blocks in one operation. On lower-spec servers this can cause a brief tick spike. Consider setting plot-size limits or educating players about reasonable revolve operations.
Update 4 Server Checklist
- Update server binaries — clients on Update 4 cannot connect to older servers
- Review voice chat settings — decide whether to enable or disable for your community
- Check backup storage — world saves will grow with new block usage
- Monitor tick rate after update, especially on 50+ player servers
- Communicate new features to your players — voice chat, emotes, and the Revolve tool
