Project Zomboid: Administrative Access & Permissions
Managing a Project Zomboid server requires delegating authority. Whether you need a simple **Moderator** to watch the chat or a full **Admin** to manage mods and world resets, understanding the hierarchy of power is essential for a healthy community.
1. Direct Command
You can grant admin status directly through the server console or in-game if you already have admin powers. The command is /setaccesslevel "username" "level".
2. RCON Method
For remote management without being logged into the game, use RCON. This allows you to issue the same setaccesslevel commands from an external terminal.
3. Persistence
Permissions are tied to the account username in the server's database. Even if a player dies and creates a new character, their administrative rank remains intact.
How to Grant Admin Powers
- Authentication: In-game, type
/setaccesslevel "YourName" adminif you have the server's admin password. - To promote another player, use the following syntax in the console or chat:
/setaccesslevel "PlayerName" admin - The player must log out and log back in for the full Admin Panel (the red "Admin" button on the left) to appear.
Hierarchy of Access Levels
Project Zomboid features several tiers of permissions. Choosing the right one prevents "power creep" and protects your server from accidents.
| Rank | Abilities | Ideal For... |
|---|---|---|
| Admin | Full control. Can spawn items, teleport, ban, and modify server settings. | Server Owners only. |
| Moderator | Can ban/unban, kick, and teleport. Cannot modify core server architecture. | Community managers and trusted friends. |
| Overseer | Can see invisible players, teleport, and spectate. Limited combat powers. | Anti-cheat investigators. |
| GM (Game Master) | Focuses on world-building. Can spawn items and zombies but has limited player moderation. | Event planners and RP storytellers. |
| Observer | Cannot interact with the world. Can fly and pass through walls. | Recording footage or silently watching players. |
Pro Tip: Never give out the "Admin" rank to someone who only needs to kick trolls. Use the Moderator rank instead; it includes the /ban and /kick commands without the risk of accidentally deleting world regions or resetting the time.
