Enshrouded Save Game Rollback and Backup Recovery
The newest official save-management documentation makes Enshrouded backup recovery much clearer than older rename-only guides. Each world uses a static hexadecimal ID, each world keeps ten rolling copies, and the active copy is selected through a companion -index file.
Important split: world saves live on the dedicated server, but character progression does not. If only one player's gear or level is wrong, you may be dealing with a client-side issue instead. See Steam Cloud Character Sync Fix.
What the Official Save System Looks Like
| Element | What It Does | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Static world ID | Each world gets a fixed hex name based on creation order. | You can identify the same world across backups and migrations. |
| 10 rolling copies | Enshrouded rotates backup copies every 10 minutes or on shutdown. | You usually have multiple rollback points before corruption struck. |
-index file |
Stores which numbered copy is currently active under latest. |
You roll back by changing the active copy, not by random file deletion. |

Rollback Checklist
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the entire
savegamedirectory somewhere safe before touching anything. - Find the world's
-indexfile. - Open it in a text editor and locate the
latestvalue. - Change that value to an older copy number from
0to9. - Save the file and start the server.
- Verify the world date and affected structures before inviting the full group back in.
Best practice: pick the newest good copy first. Do not jump straight to the oldest backup unless you already know the damage window.
When to Use Rollback Instead of Guesswork
- Base edits vanished after a crash or forced kill.
- The world loads, but recent terrain or structure changes are obviously broken.
- The save exists, but the active copy is newer than the last known good state.
When Rollback Will Not Fix the Problem
| Problem | Why Rollback Is Wrong | Use Instead |
|---|---|---|
| One player lost levels or items | Character progression lives on the client, not the dedicated server. | Steam Cloud Character Sync Fix |
| Server never reaches online state | The issue may be config or networking, not the save itself. | Startup Logs and File Locations |
| Gameplay settings ignored after update | That is a config-schema issue. | Config Changes Not Applying |
