Two-Story Building Support Fix - Unturned Wiki

How to Fix "Missing a Floor" When Building a Two-Story House

If Unturned refuses to place your second level and keeps saying you are missing a floor or support piece, the problem is almost always the snap chain under the piece you are trying to place. Multi-story bases need valid floor, wall, roof, and pillar connections before upper pieces will lock in.

Quick Build Rule

Do not start the second story from empty air. Build from a valid first-floor square, snap walls or pillars at the edge, then attach the next floor tile from an existing supported piece.

Most Common Causes

Problem What You See Fix
No snapped base floor The upper tile floats red and will not place Start from a finished first-floor square, not from terrain beside it
Missing pillars or walls below Upper corners refuse to connect Add walls or vertical supports before extending outward
Wrong piece orientation It looks lined up but never turns green Rotate the floor, roof, or wall until it matches the snap direction
Trying to bridge too far One side snaps, the far side does not Build in smaller spans and add supports in the middle
Claim or map restriction No placement even with a valid shape Move slightly, check nearby claims, and test outside the point of interest

Reliable Order for a Second Story

  1. Place a complete first-floor square with foundations and floors snapped correctly.
  2. Add four walls or corner supports where the second story will start.
  3. Stand on the first floor and snap the new floor tile directly to the top edge of those walls.
  4. Build the second story outward one square at a time instead of trying to place the outermost piece first.
  5. If you want a roof above it, snap roof pieces only after the upper floor ring is finished.

Safe Starter Pattern

Ground level:
[Floor][Floor]
[Floor][Floor]

Second level:
    place walls first
    then snap upper floors
    then add roof pieces

Good habit: Prove the layout with cheap wood parts first. After the snap points are working, replace sections with stronger materials for the final base.

If It Still Will Not Place

  • Step back and remove the last piece you placed. A single mis-rotated wall can break the whole chain.
  • Try the same pattern in an open field to rule out no-build volumes or map geometry.
  • On modded servers, test in vanilla first because some custom pieces have stricter snap behavior.
  • If you are inside a claimed or protected area, have the owner test placement too.

Planning a bigger faction base? Host your Unturned server with enough headroom for large builds, storage walls, and regular backup points.
