DayZ: Base Building Guide — Fences, Walls & Watchtowers
DayZ base building is gated by tools and time. Every structure starts as a kit, gets a base built from logs, then frames + panels of planks (or sheet metal). Watchtowers extend up vertically. This guide covers the full material list and the build sequence that catches first-time builders.
Tools You'll Need
- Hatchet, Pickaxe, Shovel, or Farming Hoe — for digging the fence base into the ground.
- Hammer or Hatchet — for nailing planks and frames.
- Pliers — for barbed wire reinforcement (optional).
- Combat Knife / Hatchet — for cutting sticks and ropes.
Building a Fence (Wall Section)
Step 1: Craft the Fence Kit
Combine 2 sticks + 1 rope in your inventory. Drag the kit into your hands and place it where you want the fence section.
Step 2: Construct the Base
- Attach 2 wooden logs to the deployed kit (drag and drop or vicinity action).
- With a shovel, hatchet, pickaxe, or farming hoe equipped, perform the Construct Fence Base action.
- The base is now sunk into the ground and immovable.
Step 3: Add Frames and Panels
- Attach planks + nails to the base.
- With a hammer or hatchet equipped, build the upper and lower frames.
- Attach more planks/nails, build the panels on the frames.
- The fence section is complete and blocks line-of-sight + zombie pathing.
Orientation tip: the textured (inside) face of the fence should face you when you place the kit. Wrong orientation means raiders can manipulate the fence from outside as if they're inside — a major security flaw missed by new builders.
Optional Fence Reinforcements
| Addition | Materials | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Elevated Platform | Planks + nails | Stand on top of the fence to shoot down. Only requires the base to be built. |
| Stairs (left/right) | Planks + nails + hammer/hatchet | Climb to the elevated platform. |
| Camouflage Net | Camo net | Conceals the fence from distance. |
| Barbed Wire | Pliers + barbed wire | Damages players climbing or close-contacting the fence. |
| Sheet Metal | Sheet metal panels | 2× durability vs planks. Plank walls survive ~7 grenades; sheet metal endures roughly twice as many. |
Building a Watchtower
Step 1: Craft the Watchtower Kit
Combine 4 sticks + 1 rope. The kit produces a 4-corner foundation marker.
Step 2: Set the Support Pillars
- With a shovel equipped, dig in 4 wooden logs as support pillars at each corner of the kit.
- The watchtower foundation is now placed.
Step 3: Build the First Level
| Component | Materials |
|---|---|
| Level Base (floor) | 4 wooden logs |
| Stairs to next level | 18 nails + 6 planks |
| Roof / next-level platform | 20 nails + 10 planks |
Step 4: Add Higher Levels
- Stand at the top of the existing staircase and look down.
- Build the second-floor base (4 more logs).
- Add stairs and roof for level 2.
- Repeat for level 3.
- Each new level requires the prior level's base AND roof to be fully built first.
Total Material Cost (Reference)
| Structure | Logs | Planks | Nails | Other |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Fence section | 2 | ~12 | ~30 | 2 sticks + 1 rope (kit) |
| Watchtower (1 level) | 8 | 16 | 38 | 4 sticks + 1 rope (kit) |
| Watchtower (3 levels) | 16 | 48 | 114 | 4 sticks + 1 rope (kit) |
Strategy Tips
- Pick terrain that does work for you: hide your base behind natural elevation, water, or dense forest. A perfectly square fence on open ground is a billboard for raiders.
- Build sheet metal walls if your loot is worth it. The 2× durability over planks is the difference between surviving and rebuilding.
- Use multiple watchtowers as overlapping firing positions. One watchtower is a sniper-bait; three covering each other is a kill zone.
- Don't build right on the road. Patrol routes plus visibility plus easy retreat for raiders = your base gone overnight.
Common Mistakes
- Wrong fence orientation (textured face outward) — raiders treat the fence as if they're inside.
- Missing tools — you can't construct the base without a digging tool, can't build frames without a hammer.
- Skipping the level-N roof and trying to build level N+1 — fails silently.
- Plank walls in a high-loot area — 7 grenades and you're done.
