Fix Hytale Server Connection Timeouts
Connection timeouts are one of the most frustrating issues when trying to join or host a Hytale server. This guide will help you diagnose and resolve timeout issues to get you back to playing with friends.
Understanding Connection Timeouts
A connection timeout occurs when:
- Your client can't establish a connection to the server within the time limit
- Network latency is too high for stable communication
- Server resources are insufficient to handle connection requests
- Firewall or network issues are blocking the connection
Network Latency
High ping or unstable internet connection
Server Overload
Insufficient RAM or CPU for connection handling
Configuration Issues
Incorrect timeout settings or port configuration
Solution 1: Optimize Server Configuration
Adjust Timeout Settings
The server's config.json has a ConnectionTimeouts section with one duration for each step of a join: InitialTimeout, AuxStreamPendingTimeout, AuthTimeout, AuthGrantTimeout, AuthTokenTimeout, AuthServerExchangeTimeout, PasswordTimeout, PlayTimeout, SetupWorldSettings, SetupAssetsRequest, SetupSendAssets and SetupAddToUniverse. Raise the one for the step where players drop, which the log shows. There is no connectionTimeout, readTimeout or keepAlive setting.
Network Notes
- QUIC over UDP: Hytale does not use TCP, so TCP settings such as
TCP_NODELAYand Nagle's algorithm do not apply. - One port: players connect to the UDP port set with
--bind, 5520 by default. - Rate limit:
config.jsonhas aRateLimitsection (Enabled,PacketsPerSecond, default 2000, andBurstCapacity, default 500). Players on poor links who drop right after joining can be hitting it, so check it before raising other limits.
Solution 2: Client-Side Fixes
Check Internet Connection
- Test your internet speed and stability
- Run a ping test to the server:
ping server.address.com - Check for packet loss:
ping -t server.address.com(Windows) - Try a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi
Firewall and Security
Ensure your client isn't blocking the connection:
- Add Hytale to Windows Firewall exceptions
- Temporarily disable antivirus to test
- Check if VPN or proxy is interfering
- Verify router isn't blocking gaming ports
Solution 3: Server-Side Optimization
Resource Allocation
Ensure your server has adequate resources:
| Player Count | Minimum RAM | Recommended RAM | CPU Cores |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-10 players | 4GB | 6GB | 2 cores |
| 10-20 players | 6GB | 8GB | 4 cores |
| 20+ players | 8GB | 12GB+ | 6+ cores |
Java VM Optimization
Configure Java arguments for better performance:
-Xms4G -Xmx8G -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200
-XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:+UseStringDeduplication
Solution 4: Network Infrastructure
Port Configuration
Ensure these ports are properly configured:
- Game Port: UDP 5520 by default, set with
--bind. Hytale uses QUIC over UDP, so forward UDP, not TCP. - There is no separate query port and no RCON port: one UDP port serves every player.
DDoS Protection
If your server is under attack:
- Enable rate limiting on connection requests
- Use DDoS protection services
- Implement connection cooldowns
- Monitor for unusual connection patterns
Troubleshooting Steps
Step 1: Diagnose
Check server logs for timeout patterns and error messages
Step 2: Test
Try connecting with a minimal configuration to isolate issues
Step 3: Optimize
Adjust timeout settings and resource allocation
Step 4: Monitor
Watch for improvements and adjust settings as needed
Advanced Troubleshooting
Network Analysis Tools
Use these tools to diagnose network issues:
- Wireshark: Analyze network packets and identify bottlenecks
- traceroute: Check network path to server
- ss: Check that the server is listening on its UDP port (
ss -uln) - PingPlotter: Continuous ping monitoring with graphs
Server Monitoring
Implement monitoring to catch issues early:
# Monitor script example
while true; do
timestamp=$(date)
listening=$(ss -uln | grep -c ':5520 ')
echo "$timestamp - Server UDP socket listening: $listening"
sleep 30
done
Preventing Future Timeouts
Regular Maintenance
- Monitor server resource usage regularly
- Keep Java and server software updated
- Implement automated restarts during low-traffic periods
- Use performance monitoring tools
Scaling Considerations
Plan for growth:
- Start with more resources than you need
- Use scalable hosting solutions
- Implement load balancing for large servers
- Consider server clustering for very large communities
Pro Tip: For community servers, implement a queue system during high-traffic periods. This prevents connection timeouts from overwhelming the server and provides a better player experience.
Emergency Fixes
If your server is experiencing immediate timeout issues:
- Restart the server to clear any stuck connections
- Temporarily reduce player limits
- Disable resource-intensive plugins or mods
- Increase timeout values as a temporary measure
- Contact your hosting provider for network diagnostics
Keep your Hytale server running smoothly with proper timeout configuration and network optimization for the best multiplayer experience.
