Project Zomboid: West Point Map & Points of Interest

West Point is a multiplayer pressure cooker. The town's high zombie density and tight commercial core mean a noisy firefight can pull a horde onto your whole group at once. Managed Project Zomboid server hosting from Supercraft keeps the server stable when ten players and a few hundred zombies are all on screen, so the fight is decided by your aim, not by lag.

West Point is the high-risk, high-reward starter town. It sits centrally in the Knox County map and is widely regarded as the most dangerous of the four default spawns, thanks to thick zombie density along its roads. It is also the most rewarding starter town, with the best loot ceiling of the four: a real gun store, a large supermarket and a police armory all within one town.

West Point Map

West Point is laid out around long roads that run roughly east to west, which makes crossing the town quick by car but also means the main commercial strip funnels zombies along those same roads. The dense core is in the center and along main street; the outskirts and the houses to the north are far sparser. The town connects south down the Dixie Highway corridor toward the Dixie rest area and Muldraugh, and it is within reach of Riverside to the north for groups that want to combine West Point's loot with Riverside's river sustainability.

The practical mental model: the middle of West Point is where the loot and the danger both live, and the edges are where you survive. New players who walk straight into the commercial district to grab the gun store usually die doing it. Players who work the outskirts first, build a base, and then stage careful runs into the center tend to thrive.

Difficulty: High

The most dangerous default spawn. Zombie density along the roads and through the commercial core is punishing. Survivable with discipline, lethal with carelessness.

Loot Density: Very High

Gun store, GigaMart supermarket, police armory, hardware store, bookstore and a pharmacy/dentistry, all in one town. The best starter-town loot ceiling in the game.

Base Potential: Medium to High

Strong spots exist on the outskirts and to the north, but downtown bases pay a constant horde tax. Best for players who can clear and hold.

Points of Interest

West Point packs an unusual amount into a single town. The buildings that matter:

  • The Gun Store. West Point's signature building. It sits in the northeast of town, right next to Twiggy's bar, in a relatively secluded, tree-surrounded corner. It holds firearms and ammunition, and reaching the stock typically means dealing with locked access (a sledgehammer or metalworking approach is the usual route). The surrounding corner is comparatively quiet, which is the one mercy in an otherwise deadly errand.
  • GigaMart. The large supermarket, also toward the northeast near the motel and behind Twiggy's. Shelves in the front and a stockroom in the back carry huge quantities of food and water - fresh items, canned food, pasta, rice, snacks and drinks. It is the best single food haul in any starter town.
  • Police Station. On main street, next to the furniture shop and behind Knox Bank. The armory and lockers hold pistols, shotguns, ammunition, weapon attachments, batons and body armor, behind locked doors. A high-value but high-traffic objective.
  • Knox Bank. Adjacent to the police station on main street. Notable for a basement vault, a flavorful objective more than a survival necessity.
  • Hardware Store. Near the commercial district by a gas station. Tools, building supplies, seeds and a basement with crafting stations make it a day-one priority for setting up a base.
  • Enigma Bookstore. On main street, dense with skill books and magazines, with apartments above that double as a defensible safehouse.
  • Pharmacy / Dentistry. Near the bookstore, stocked with medical supplies - antibiotics, painkillers and first aid.
  • School. Holds a library section (skill books) and the usual school layout. Approachable from adjacent houses to avoid the front entrance crowd.
  • Gas stations and warehouses/storage units. Fuel, car keys and oil at the stations; tools, materials and temporary-base potential at the storage units and the warehouse beside them.

As always, exact contents vary by game version and sandbox loot settings. The building types above are the reliable fixtures of West Point; use the in-game map and the interactive map for precise streets.

Best Base Locations in West Point

1. The houses north of town

A small cluster of secluded houses north of West Point sits well away from the dense core, with minimal zombie presence. This is the long-term-survival pick: quiet enough to live in, close enough to stage loot runs into the center. Wall the gaps between the houses and you have a calm base on the doorstep of the best loot in any starter town.

2. The Enigma Bookstore apartments

The apartments above Enigma Books on main street, especially the middle unit, have everything a safehouse needs. Destroy the stairs and use sheet ropes for access and the unit becomes effectively zombie-proof. The trade-off is location: you are downtown, so every gunshot is a problem.

3. The Hardware Store upper floor

The hardware store has a second-floor apartment above a basement full of crafting equipment, sitting in the commercial district. Convenient for crafting and central looting, with the same caveat as the bookstore - you pay a horde tax for being downtown.

Tip: If you want both West Point's loot ceiling and a quiet home, base on the outskirts (north houses or a fenced lot on the edge) and treat the commercial core as a loot run, not a residence. Twiggy's, the gun store and GigaMart are an expedition, not a neighborhood.

Spawning in West Point

West Point is one of the four default spawn towns, and it is the hardest of them. Danger level: high. The roads and the commercial core carry heavy zombie density from minute one, so a fresh spawn here is far more punishing than Rosewood or Riverside.

For new players: West Point is survivable, but only if you respect it. Spawn, immediately move to the outskirts, avoid the commercial center until you have a melee weapon and a plan, and never fire a gun in town until you have an escape route mapped. The single most common death here is a beginner walking down main street toward the gun store and getting swarmed before they reach the door.

For advanced players: West Point is arguably the best starter town. The loot ceiling means you can arm up, feed up and book up faster than anywhere except Louisville, and the danger is exactly the kind of pressure experienced survivors enjoy. Stick to the outskirts, build up, then pry the center open piece by piece.

Whether you are running a hardcore solo challenge or a chaotic multiplayer server, West Point's density is what separates a smooth game from a slideshow. Managed Project Zomboid server hosting from Supercraft handles the dense hordes and tight interiors so your group can fight for the gun store without the server buckling under the crowd.

Common Mistakes in West Point

  • Heading straight for the gun store on day one. The gun store is the reason most beginners pick West Point and the reason most beginners die in West Point. Build a melee kit and a route first; the firearms are not going anywhere.
  • Fighting in the commercial core. The center has the heaviest density in town. Pull zombies out to the quiet edges and fight them there instead of being surrounded on main street.
  • Ignoring the outskirts. The north houses and edge lots are where you actually survive. New players who try to live downtown burn through health and ammo faster than they can replace them.
  • Shooting too early. A gun solves one fight and creates ten. In a town this dense, melee and stealth keep you alive far longer than firepower does in the first week.

How West Point Compares to the Other Starter Towns

TownZombie densityLoot ceilingWho it suits
West PointHighVery high (gun store, GigaMart, armory)Risk-tolerant and experienced players
MuldraughMediumHigh (warehouses, variety)Balanced, all-round start
RiversideLowMediumLong-term survival runs
RosewoodLowLow to mediumBeginners

West Point trades safety for ceiling. If you want the fastest path to firearms, food and skill books among the starter towns and you can handle the pressure, it is the best pick. If you are still learning the game, start in Rosewood or Riverside and graduate to West Point once you can manage a horde without panicking.
