Pre-Hardmode Bosses (8)
Pre-Hardmode is everything before the Wall of Flesh dies. The 8 bosses below should be tackled roughly in the listed order. Defeating any one for the first time unlocks NPCs, vendor inventory, and ore tiers.
| Boss | HP (Classic / Expert / Master) | Summon | Key Drops | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| King Slime | 2,000 / 2,800 / 3,570 | Slime Crown, Slime Rain (150 slimes), or natural spawn | Ninja Set (cosmetic), Slimy Saddle (post-Plantera drop) | Gold or Platinum armor and any bow with flaming arrows. Build a small wall to limit teleports. Easiest boss in the game. |
| Eye of Cthulhu | 2,800 / 3,640 / 4,641 | Suspicious Looking Eye at night, or natural spawn (10% chance once you have 200 HP) | Demonite or Crimtane Ore, Eye of Cthulhu Mask, Shield of Cthulhu (Expert) | Silver or Tungsten armor, bow with Jester's Arrows from the Skeleton Merchant. Sky-bridge platform with campfires. Phase 2 begins at 65% HP. |
| Eater of Worlds (Corruption) | 10,050 / 15,120 / 19,296 | Worm Food, or break 3 Shadow Orbs | Shadow Scales, Demonite Ore, Eater's Bone | Fight in The Corruption itself. Use piercing weapons (Vilethorn, Jester's Arrows). Each segment can be killed individually. |
| Brain of Cthulhu (Crimson) | 1,250 / 2,125 / 2,709 | Bloody Spine, or break 3 Crimson Hearts | Tissue Samples, Crimtane Ore, Brain of Confusion (Expert) | Two phases. Phase 1: kill all Creepers. Phase 2: brain teleports and becomes vulnerable. Light the Crimson with Glowsticks before engaging. |
| Queen Bee | 3,400 / 4,760 / 6,069 | Abeemination, or destroy a Bee Hive Larva | Bee Wax (for Bee armor), Bee's Knees, Beenade, Hive Pack (Expert) | Fight in a flat section of the Underground Jungle (cramped tunnels make her stinger spam unkillable). Bee armor + Bee's Knees trivializes Queen Slime later. |
| Deerclops | 7,000 / 11,900 / 15,172 | Deer Thing in the Snow biome at night, or natural spawn during a Blizzard | Eye Bone (pet), Lucy the Axe, Pew-matic Horn, Don't Starve Shader | Don't Starve crossover boss added in 1.4.3. Stays still and conjures shadow hands; build a flat icy arena and strafe. Drops scale with Hardmode if killed late. |
| Skeletron | 4,400 head + arms / 8,800 / 11,220 | Talk to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance at night | Skeletron Hand, Book of Skulls, unlocks Dungeon access, Clothier NPC | Kill both hands first to lower his damage, then focus the head. Must be killed before dawn or he one-shots you. Minishark + molten armor. |
| Wall of Flesh | 8,000 / 11,200 / 14,280 | Throw a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava in the Underworld (kills the Guide) | Pwnhammer (breaks Demon Altars to spawn Hardmode ores), Night's Edge ingredients, Demon Heart (Expert) | Build a long Hellbridge with platforms across the Underworld. Hellwing Bow + molten armor. Killing the Wall triggers Hardmode permanently for the world. |
Hardmode Bosses (10)
Hardmode begins the moment Wall of Flesh dies. The world generates Cobalt / Mythril / Adamantite veins, evil biomes spread, and stronger enemies appear everywhere. Mechanical bosses can be fought in any order; it is conventional to do all three before Plantera.
| Boss | HP (Classic / Expert / Master) | Summon | Key Drops | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Queen Slime (optional) | 18,000 / 28,800 / 36,720 | Gelatin Crystal in the Underground Hallow | Crown Jewel, Slimy Saddle (mount), Volatile Gelatin (Expert) | Optional early-Hardmode warm-up. Adamantite or Titanium armor with a Megashark works. Builds toward a wing-replacement for the slimy saddle mount. |
| The Twins | 20,000 + 23,000 / 30,000 + 34,500 / 38,250 + 43,988 | Mechanical Eye at night | Hallowed Bars, Souls of Sight (for Optic Staff, Megashark) | Two heads, second-phase laser/charge mode. Long horizontal arena, Daedalus Stormbow with Holy Arrows is the consensus easy mode. |
| The Destroyer | 80,000 / 120,000 / 153,000 | Mechanical Worm at night | Hallowed Bars, Souls of Might (for Megashark, Excalibur) | Many segments + probes. Daedalus Stormbow with Holy Arrows or piercing magic destroys this fight. Stay airborne over a Sunflower line. |
| Skeletron Prime | 59,000 head+limbs / 88,500 / 112,836 | Mechanical Skull at night | Hallowed Bars, Souls of Fright (for Megashark, Death Sickle ingredients) | Four limbs (Saw, Vice, Cannon, Laser). Cannon is the most dangerous; kill it first. Must be killed before dawn (head goes berserk in spin mode). |
| Plantera | 30,000 / 42,000 / 53,550 | Break a Plantera's Bulb in the Underground Jungle (only spawns after a Mech is dead) | Temple Key (unlocks Jungle Temple), Grenade Launcher, Pygmy Staff, Seedling (pet), Flower Pow | Cleared Underground Jungle arena with platforms and honey pools. Phase 2 (below 50% HP) makes her a relentless flying horror; have a Mirror to escape. |
| Golem | 60,000 (head + body + 2 fists) / 90,000 / 114,749 | Lihzahrd Power Cell on the Lihzahrd Altar (Jungle Temple) | Picksaw (mines Chlorophyte and Lihzahrd Brick), Eye of the Golem, Stynger, Heat Ray, Sun Stone | Fight in the Lihzahrd Temple arena (or relocate the altar). Beetle armor or Shroomite armor. Head detaches in Phase 2 and is much more aggressive. |
| Duke Fishron | 60,000 / 78,000 / 99,450 | Truffle Worm as fishing bait in the Ocean | Tsunami, Razorblade Typhoon, Tempest Staff, Fishron Wings, Bubble Gun | Long Ocean platform arena. Tsunami once you get it makes everything else easier. Phase 3 ("Ducking Fishron") in Expert+ is the spike, expect to die a few times. |
| Empress of Light | 70,000 / 98,000 / 124,950 | Kill a Prismatic Lacewing in the Hallow at night (post-Plantera) | Empress Wings, Terraprisma (daytime kill only), Empress Flail, Prismatic Bolt, Nightglow | One of the hardest fights in vanilla. Daytime version one-shots on any non-dodged hit but drops the Terraprisma summon (best summoner weapon in the game). Master mode daytime is a brutal achievement. |
| Lunatic Cultist | 32,000 / 48,000 / 61,200 | Defeat the four Cultists that spawn at the Dungeon entrance after Golem is dead | Triggers the Lunar Events; drops Ancient Manipulator (crafting station for Lunar gear) | Don't hit the clones (the real one breaks a transparent shimmer). Stardust Dragon Staff or Razorblade Typhoon clears it fast. Spectre or Shroomite armor. |
| Moon Lord | 145,000 / 217,500 / 277,311 | Auto-spawn after defeating all four Lunar Pillars, or use a Celestial Sigil | Luminite (4 endgame armor sets), Meowmere, Star Wrath, Last Prism, Celebration Mk2, S.D.M.G., Terrarian, Rainbow Crystal Staff | Three eyes + heart. Eyes go invulnerable when not staring; mouth Phantasmal Deathray is the killer. Long arena with asphalt + Wings + Master Ninja Gear. Solar Flare / Vortex / Nebula / Stardust armor depending on class. |
Event Bosses (14)
Event bosses appear during invasions or environmental events instead of via a craftable summon. They are usually waves: lesser enemies first, named bosses in later waves. The major events plus their boss roster:

Lunar Events (4 Pillars)
| Pillar | Class Theme | Fragments / Endgame Use |
|---|---|---|
| Solar Pillar | Melee | Solar Fragments, Solar Flare armor, Solar Eruption, Daybreak |
| Vortex Pillar | Ranger | Vortex Fragments, Vortex armor, Phantasm, Vortex Beater, S.D.M.G. (Moon Lord drop) |
| Nebula Pillar | Mage | Nebula Fragments, Nebula armor, Nebula Blaze, Nebula Arcanum, Last Prism (Moon Lord drop) |
| Stardust Pillar | Summoner | Stardust Fragments, Stardust armor, Stardust Dragon Staff, Stardust Cell Staff, Rainbow Crystal Staff (Moon Lord drop) |
The four Pillars spawn after defeating the Lunatic Cultist. Each becomes vulnerable after 100/150 nearby enemies are killed. Defeating all four triggers Moon Lord one minute later.
Seed-Exclusive Boss
| Boss | HP | Summon | Drops | World Seed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mechdusa | Combined HP of all three Mechs (~159,000+ Classic) | Suspicious Looking Eye / Mechanical summon on the seed | All three Mechanical drops in one fight, plus Medusa Head | Combined "For the Worthy" + "Don't Dig Up" + "Get Fixed Boi" secret seed (1.4.4 addition) |
Arena Construction
A consistent arena across pre-Hardmode through Moon Lord saves you the most time. Three reference layouts:
| Tier | Layout | Key Tiles |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-Hardmode | 3 to 4 stacked wood platforms, 20 blocks apart, 80-100 blocks long | Campfire, Heart Lantern, Honey pool, Bast Statue (Plantera onward) |
| Hardmode | 6+ platforms with rope-line escape, asphalt runway underneath, Heart Statue + 1-second timer | Star in a Bottle, Sunflowers (-17% enemy spawns), Garden Gnome |
| Post-Plantera / Moon Lord | Sky-high asphalt runway, 500+ blocks long, with safety platform stack at midpoint, Nurse house at edge | All of the above plus Slice of Cake, Sweetened Pumpkin Pie, Master Ninja Gear |
Class Progression Guide
Pick one class for boss DPS and stick with it; switching mid-Hardmode wastes ore on multiple armor sets. Quick progression by class:
| Class | Pre-Hardmode | Early Hardmode | Mid Hardmode | Late Hardmode | Endgame |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melee | Night's Edge + Molten armor | Adamantite/Titanium armor, Shadowflame Knife | Chlorophyte armor, Terra Blade | Beetle armor, Influx Waver, Solar Eruption | Solar Flare armor, Zenith |
| Ranged | Minishark + Necro armor | Adamantite/Titanium armor, Megashark or Daedalus Stormbow | Shroomite armor, Chlorophyte Bullets | Shroomite armor, Tsunami / Chain Gun / Phantasm | Vortex armor, S.D.M.G., Phantasm |
| Magic | Space Gun + Meteor armor (free with Space Gun) | Adamantite/Titanium armor, Crystal Storm | Spectre armor (healing set), Golden Shower | Spectre armor (damage set), Razorblade Typhoon | Nebula armor, Last Prism, Nebula Arcanum |
| Summoner | Bee armor + Imp Staff | Spider armor, Spider Staff, Sanguine Staff | Hallowed armor (or Forbidden), Blade Staff, Optic Staff | Tiki / Spooky armor, Xeno Staff, Terraprisma (Empress daytime) | Stardust armor, Stardust Dragon Staff or Cell Staff |
Expert & Master Mode Tips
Expert mode adds new attack patterns, bigger HP/damage scaling, and Treasure Bag drops with exclusive items. Master mode multiplies HP another 1.5x on top of Expert and damage 1.4x, plus drops Relics (decorative) and exclusive pet items.
Expert-Exclusive Treasure Bag Drops
| Boss | Treasure Bag Item | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Eye of Cthulhu | Shield of Cthulhu | Dash ability (5 sec cooldown) |
| Brain of Cthulhu | Brain of Confusion | 16% dodge chance, ranged crit boost on dodge |
| Queen Bee | Hive Pack | 50% bee damage and movement boost |
| Skeletron | Bone Glove | Throws homing bones |
| Wall of Flesh | Demon Heart | +1 accessory slot (permanent, character-bound) |
| Plantera | Spore Sac | Slowly releases damaging spores around you |
| Duke Fishron | Shrimpy Truffle | Cute Fishron mount (one of the fastest mounts in the game) |
| Moon Lord | Gravity Globe / Suspicious Looking Tentacle / Celestial Onion | Toggle gravity / lantern pet / +1 accessory slot |
Master Mode Differences
- Boss HP: 1.5x Expert, 2x Classic.
- Boss damage: 1.4x Expert.
- Defense: Player defense is 25% less effective.
- Drops: Adds Relics (decorative trophies) and exclusive pet items per boss.
- Daytime Empress of Light: One-shot any non-dodged hit; drop is the Terraprisma summon (best summon in the game).
Pro Tip: Build a Nurse house at the edge of every boss arena. In Expert / Master mode, a 30-coin heal at 50% HP turns a death spiral into a clean kill. Use the Magic Mirror to teleport home if the Nurse is out of reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bosses are there in Terraria?
33 in patch 1.4.4: 8 pre-Hardmode, 10 Hardmode, 14 event bosses across six events (Old One's Army, Pirate Invasion, Pumpkin Moon, Frost Moon, Martian Madness, Lunar Events), and 1 seed-exclusive (Mechdusa).
What is the order of bosses in Terraria?
King Slime, Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu, Queen Bee, Deerclops, Skeletron, Wall of Flesh (triggers Hardmode), then in Hardmode: Queen Slime (optional), the three Mechanical Bosses, Plantera, Golem, Duke Fishron, Empress of Light, Lunatic Cultist, Moon Lord.
Who is the final boss in Terraria?
Moon Lord. 145,000 / 217,500 / 277,311 HP. Drops Luminite and the strongest endgame weapons (Meowmere, Star Wrath, Last Prism, Terrarian, S.D.M.G., Rainbow Crystal Staff, Celebration Mk2).
Who is the hardest boss in Terraria?
By raw difficulty most players rank Master mode daytime Empress of Light as the hardest fight in vanilla Terraria, since any non-dodged hit one-shots the player. Moon Lord and Duke Fishron in Master mode are close behind.
What is the easiest Terraria boss?
King Slime, with only 2,000 HP in Classic and a predictable jump-and-teleport pattern. Most players defeat it within their first few in-game hours.
What boss drops the best loot in Terraria?
Moon Lord has the largest drop pool of endgame weapons plus Luminite. Plantera is the most pivotal mid-game drop because the Temple Key unlocks the Jungle Temple. Empress of Light (daytime) drops the Terraprisma, the best summoner weapon in the game.
Do I have to fight bosses in order?
Mostly yes. Plantera only spawns after a Mechanical Boss is dead. Golem requires Plantera. The Lunatic Cultist only appears after Golem. Moon Lord requires the Lunar Events, which require Lunatic Cultist. Skipping with arena tricks is possible but breaks the natural progression curve.
What is Mechdusa?
A unique 1.4.4 secret-seed boss that combines the Twins, Destroyer, and Skeletron Prime into one fight on the layered "For the Worthy + Don't Dig Up + Get Fixed Boi" world seed. Drops all three Mechanical sets in one go plus a Medusa Head.
