Terraria Summoner Progression Guide for 1.4.5.8
Checked October 11, 2026 against Terraria 1.4.5.8, the build our servers run, and the changelog that ships inside it.
Summoner progression in Terraria 1.4.5 runs on two items at every stage: the minion staff that fills your minion slots and the whip that tags enemies so those minions hit harder. Start with the Clay Bud Staff or Finch Staff and a Leather Whip, mix Imp, Flinx, Vampire Frog, Cattiva and Foxparks minions before the Wall of Flesh, move to the Blade Staff or Sanguine Staff with the Firecracker or Cool Whip in early Hardmode, then the Optic Staff and Durendal, the Terraprisma with the Kaleidoscope, and finally the Stardust Dragon with the Constellation or Possession. Since 1.4.5.7 you can also stack whips again, but only with the right accessories.
TL;DR
- Every stage: one minion plan plus one primary whip. Tag damage from the whip is added to every minion hit on a tagged enemy.
- Pre-Hardmode: minion-mix Imp, Flinx, Vampire Frog, Cattiva and Foxparks; whip with Snapthorn, Spinal Tap or Starcrash; wear Bee armor (+2 minion slots) or Obsidian armor for whip play.
- Early Hardmode: Blade Staff with Cool Whip, or Sanguine/Ruinous Staff with Firecracker; Spider armor (+3 slots); Summoner Emblem.
- Late game: Terraprisma (Empress of Light, killed entirely in daytime) with Kaleidoscope, then Stardust Dragon Staff with Firecracker or Constellation, Stardust armor (+5 slots, +1 sentry).
- New in 1.4.5.7: whip stacking returns through accessories (up to 4 tag effect slots), Kinship Peaches upgrade Cattiva and Foxparks to their Trusty versions, and the Blade Staff only receives 67% of tag damage.

What changed for summoners in 1.4.5.7 and 1.4.5.8
Most summoner guides were written for 1.4.4 or the first 1.4.5 builds. The changelog that ships with the 1.4.5.8 server files lists these summon changes, and they decide several of the picks below:
| Change | Version | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| All whips can whip stack again "when the proper accessories are equipped" | 1.4.5.7 | Two to four whip effects on one enemy, but only with the accessories in the stacking table |
| Whip tag effects are calculated independent of the order they were applied | 1.4.5.7 | Swing order no longer matters when stacking |
| Kinship Peach and Little Kinship Peach added | 1.4.5.7 | Cattiva and Foxparks become Trusty Cattiva (22 damage) and Trusty Foxparks (40 damage) |
| Cattiva damage 9 to 11; Foxparks Huggy Fire raised from 75% to 100% of item damage | 1.4.5.7 | Both Pals are worth a slot all through pre-Hardmode |
| Blade Staff tag damage penalty reintroduced at 33% | 1.4.5.7 | Enchanted Daggers get 0.67x of whip tag damage, so pick high-tag whips for them |
| Durendal: minion hits on marked enemies deal 30 extra damage | 1.4.5.7 | A strong support whip from one mechanical boss onward |
| Constellation reworked to release homing stars after minion hits | 1.4.5.7 | The go-to whip with the Stardust Dragon |
| Clay Bud Staff and Ruinous Staff added; Lightning Aura sentries lose their tag damage penalty; Xeno Staff attack speed reduced by 12.5% | 1.4.5.7 | New early and early-Hardmode minions; the Xeno Staff is slightly weaker |
| Leather Whip price cut from 10 Gold to 5 Gold | 1.4.5.7 | Buy it from the Zoologist on day one |
| Clay Bud now always knocks enemies away from the player | 1.4.5.8 | Better at keeping early enemies off you |
How summon damage works
- Minion slots: you start with one. Armor, accessories, a potion and a table raise it, to a maximum of 11 including the default slot.
- Tag damage: hitting an enemy with a whip tags it. Each minion or sentry hit on a tagged enemy adds the whip's tag damage, plus any tag damage from the minion staff's modifier. The Blade Staff multiplies that bonus by 0.67; every other summon weapon uses 1.
- Special tags: some whips add an effect instead of, or on top of, flat tag damage. The Firecracker has no flat tag damage, but makes a minion's hit on a marked enemy explode for 2.75x that hit's damage. The Starcrash drops a meteor for 1.33x.
- Modifiers: the best modifier for a minion staff is Fabled (+15% damage, +10 armor penetration, +3 summon tag damage, +15% knockback). The best for a whip is Legendary, because whips use sword modifiers.
- One-off minions: Cattiva and Foxparks can only be summoned once each, so they are always one slot in a mix. Abigail's Flower, the Desert Tiger Staff and the Stardust Dragon Staff grow a single minion instead of summoning copies.
Summoner progression by stage
The stage names follow the boss you have not beaten yet. Base damage is the weapon's listed damage before bonuses.
| Stage | Minions | Whips | Armor | Key accessories and buffs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First day | Clay Bud Staff (5), Finch Staff (7) or Abigail's Flower (6) | Leather Whip, Cobwhip | Any | White String, any accessory you find |
| Before any boss | Vampire Frog Staff (11), Flinx Staff (8), Cattiva (11) or Foxparks (20) | Snapthorn; Soulscourge or Vasculash | Any helmet and leggings, Flinx Fur Coat | Feral Claws, Summoning Potion |
| Pre-Skeletron | Imp, Flinx, Cattiva, Foxparks and Vampire Frog, one of each | Snapthorn or Starcrash | Bee armor or Obsidian armor | Pygmy Necklace, Old One's Army accessories, War Table |
| Pre-Wall of Flesh | Imp Staff all-in, or Mushroom Staff all-in | Starcrash (with Imps) or Spinal Tap (with Mushroom Bois) | Bee armor (minions) or Obsidian armor (whips) | Silver Shield, Bewitching Table, Flask of Poison |
| Early Hardmode | Blade Staff all-in, or Sanguine/Ruinous Staff all-in | Cool Whip (with Blade Staff) or Firecracker (with Sanguine/Ruinous) | Spider armor; Titanium Mask and Forbidden Robes for defense | Summoner Emblem, Twilight Grasp, Druidic Serpent Cloak |
| Pre-Plantera | Trusty Cattiva, Trusty Foxparks, 1 to 3 Spiders, Optic Staff in the rest | Durendal, Firecracker, Snapthorn | Hallowed Hood or Chlorophyte Visor set; Squire armor for defense | Summoner Emblem, Pygmy Necklace, Wicked Claws |
| Pre-Golem | Desert Tiger Staff in every slot (Firecracker build), or a Blade/Deadly Sphere mix | Vulgar Display of Flower, Firecracker, Durendal | Tiki armor | Hercules Beetle, Summoner Emblem |
| Pre-Lunatic Cultist | Terraprisma; otherwise Xeno Staff or Blade Staff | Kaleidoscope, Electric Eel, Dark Harvest | Tiki, Spooky or Valhalla Knight armor | Papyrus Scarab, Necromantic Scroll, Ouroboros Ring |
| Pre-Moon Lord | Stardust Dragon Staff, Terraprisma, Stardust Cell Staff | Firecracker or Constellation | Keep the previous set | Same as above |
| Endgame | Stardust Dragon (3 slots) with Terraprisma (8 slots) | Possession, Constellation, Dark Harvest | Stardust armor (Tiki Mask instead of the helmet with Firecracker) | Papyrus Scarab, Necromantic Scroll, Twilight Grasp, Ouroboros Ring |
Pre-Hardmode: build the minion mix
No early minion is strictly better than the others. The Clay Bud Staff is the most consistent to get: it is crafted at a Furnace from 30 Clay Blocks, a Lesser Healing Potion, a Daybloom and a Blinkroot. The Finch Staff has a 1 in 3 chance to be in a Living Wood Chest inside a Living Tree, and Abigail's Flower grows on grass near a placed Tombstone. The Leather Whip costs 5 Gold from the Zoologist.
From there, craft the Flinx Staff at a Work Bench from 6 Flinx Fur and 10 Gold or Platinum Bars, and fish during a Blood Moon for the Vampire Frog Staff: it is a 1 in 8 drop from the Wandering Eye Fish and Zombie Mermen that fishing can pull up. The Snapthorn takes 15 Stingers, 3 Vines and 12 Jungle Spores at an anvil, and its Jungle's Fury buff gives all whips 12% extra speed. The Soulscourge (12 Demonite Bars) or Vasculash (Crimson) holds you over until then.
Once you have Hellstone, craft the Imp Staff from 17 Hellstone Bars. Its fireballs pierce up to four times, which is why an all-in Imp build with the Starcrash (20 Meteorite Bars, 10 Chains, 10 Fallen Stars) is the fast way through the Hungry at the Wall of Flesh. The alternative is a Mushroom Staff all-in build (300 Glowing Mushrooms, 5 Mushroom Grass Seeds and 5 Shadow Scales or Tissue Samples) with the Spinal Tap (90 Bones and 55 Cobwebs at a Work Bench), which needs at least a platform across the arena. Bee armor gives +2 minion slots and +23% summon damage for 30 Bee Wax; Obsidian armor trades a minion for whip range and speed.
Early Hardmode: pick a damage style
The Firecracker and the Summoner Emblem (+15% summon damage) are each a 1 in 4 drop from the Wall of Flesh. Then choose:
- Tag damage build: Blade Staff (Queen Slime, 1 in 4, or 1 in 3 in Expert) in every slot with the Cool Whip (8 Souls of Light, 8 Souls of Night and a Frost Core). The daggers hit very fast, so flat tag damage matters even after the 33% penalty.
- Base damage build: Sanguine Staff (Dreadnautilus, 1 in 2, guaranteed in Expert) or the new Ruinous Staff (a Dark Shard, a Light Shard, 2 Forbidden Fragments, 5 Souls of Night and 5 Souls of Light at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil) with the Firecracker. With Ruinous, keep at least 3 slots on the Spider Staff (16 Spider Fangs) when you are clearing mobs rather than fighting a boss.
Spider armor (36 Spider Fangs) gives +3 minion slots and +28% summon damage. After a mechanical boss, craft the Durendal from 12 Hallowed Bars. After the Twins, the Optic Staff (a Black Lens, 2 Lenses, 12 Hallowed Bars, 20 Souls of Sight) is the usual replacement for the Sanguine Staff, and both Pals can be upgraded with a Kinship Peach: a Life Fruit, 12 Souls of Light and 12 Souls of Night at a Crystal Ball.
Post-Plantera to Moon Lord
The Desert Tiger Staff is always in the Dungeon's Desert Chest, which opens with a Desert Key after Plantera. The Xeno Staff is a 1 in 6 drop from the Martian Saucer. The Terraprisma drops every time from the Empress of Light if all damage to her is dealt during the day, and the Empress also has a 1 in 4 chance to drop the Kaleidoscope (20 tag damage, 10% tag critical chance). After the Lunatic Cultist, the Stardust Dragon Staff, the Stardust Cell Staff and the Constellation each cost 18 Stardust Fragments at the Ancient Manipulator. Moon Lord has a 1 in 5 chance to drop Possession, the highest tag damage of any whip in the table below.
Group tip: the daytime Empress of Light kill only counts if every point of damage lands before dusk. On a shared world, agree on a start time and arena before anyone summons her, and keep everyone who is not ready out of the fight rather than letting a night-time hit cancel the Terraprisma.

Whip stacking accessories
You start with one tag effect slot, so a second whip normally overwrites the first. Since 1.4.5.7, accessories add slots, up to a maximum of 4. With several tags on one enemy, their tag damage adds up, while the modifier's bonus tag damage still applies only once. Only base effects stack: an Ouroboros Ring and a Druidic Serpent Cloak share the Snake Band, so you do not get its effect twice.
| Accessory | Tag effect slots | Other effects |
|---|---|---|
| Mobius Strip | +1 | +10% whip range |
| Wicked Armlet | +1 | +1 whip knockback |
| Silver Bracer | +1 | Triples the duration of tag effects |
| Snake Band | 0 | Every third whip attack adds an extra swing at 30% damage, using the next whip in your inventory if you have more than one tag slot |
| Ouroboros Ring | +1 | Snake Band and Mobius Strip combined |
| Wicked Claws | +1 | +12% melee speed and autoswing for whips |
| Silver Shield | +1 | Silver Bracer plus knockback immunity and +2 defense |
| Twilight Grasp | +2 | Silver Bracer and Wicked Armlet combined |
A practical late-game stack is Twilight Grasp plus Ouroboros Ring (4 slots): tag with the Kaleidoscope or Possession for flat damage, then the Firecracker or Dark Harvest for their special effect.
Getting Cattiva and Foxparks
Cattiva (11 damage, and it mines with roughly Iron Pickaxe power) and Foxparks (20 damage, with a flamethrower you can aim) are Palworld crossover minions added in 1.4.5. You rescue them rather than craft them:
- A distressed Pal can spawn during the day on Grass, Jungle grass, Snow or Ice on the surface, never in a Graveyard and never in the center quarter of the world.
- Two Goblin Archers spawn beside it. Kill both and walk within about 6 tiles, and the Pal turns into its item.
- If you already carry one of the two, the game spawns the other. With both or neither, it is 60% Cattiva and 40% Foxparks, and good luck shifts the roll toward Foxparks.
- Only one distressed Pal exists at a time, so find and save it before hoping for the next.
A long strip of Snow or Ice blocks in the outer part of the map, with a Water Candle and a Battle Potion, is the usual way to speed this up. Both Pals stay useful into Hardmode once a Kinship Peach makes them Trusty.
Every way to add a minion slot
| Source | Slots | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Default | 1 | Every character |
| Summoning Potion | +1 | Lasts 8 minutes |
| Bewitching Table | +1 | Lasts until you die or leave the world |
| Pygmy Necklace | +1 | Witch Doctor, 20 Gold, at night |
| Bee armor | +2 | Full set, pre-Hardmode |
| Spider armor | +3 | Full set, early Hardmode |
| Tiki armor | +4 | Full set, also +30% whip range |
| Stardust armor | +5 | Full set, also +1 sentry slot |
| Papyrus Scarab | +1 | Also +15% summon damage |
| Necromantic Scroll | +1 | Also +10% summon damage, post-Plantera |
Sentries are separate: the War Table adds one sentry slot until you die or leave, and before Hardmode the Apprentice's Scarf or Squire's Shield adds another, for a maximum of three.
FAQ
What is the best summoner weapon in Terraria?
The Terraprisma is widely rated the strongest because it performs in every fight. The Stardust Dragon Staff has higher damage but struggles against fast or spread-out targets such as the Lunar Events, so the endgame setup runs both.
Can you whip stack in Terraria 1.4.5?
Yes, since 1.4.5.7, but only with accessories that add tag effect slots (Mobius Strip, Wicked Armlet, Silver Bracer and their upgrades). Without them a new whip tag replaces the old one.
What armor should a summoner use?
Bee armor before Hardmode, Spider armor in early Hardmode, the Hallowed Hood or Chlorophyte Visor set before Plantera, Tiki armor until the Lunar Events, and Stardust armor at the end.
How do you get Trusty Cattiva and Trusty Foxparks?
Craft the Pal's item with a Kinship Peach by hand. The peach is made from a Life Fruit, 12 Souls of Light and 12 Souls of Night at a Crystal Ball.
