Valheim Plus vs Native World Modifiers: Which To Use in 2026

Valheim Plus vs native world modifiers

For years Valheim Plus was treated as mandatory on any serious dedicated server, because the base game exposed almost nothing you could tune. That is no longer the situation. Valheim now ships world modifiers that cover most of the reasons people installed V+ in the first place, and they are set with launch parameters rather than a DLL.

This page is about which of the two to use. It is not an argument that mods are bad.

Where Valheim Plus actually stands

  • The original ValheimPlus is deprecated. Its last Thunderstore release was in December 2022 and the package is flagged deprecated. Anything still pointing you at it is out of date.
  • The maintained fork is ValheimPlus_Grantapher_Temporary. It published 10.0.0 on 10 September 2026, the day after 1.0, which is a major version bump made for the new build.
  • Published is not the same as working. Players reported interface and inventory display problems with the fork immediately after 1.0. If you depend on it, test on a copy of your world before putting it on the server people play on. Our 1.0 mod compatibility tracker carries the current state.

What native modifiers replace

Modifiers are set on the server command line as -modifier <category> <value>. There is no mod loader involved, so console players can join, and a game update cannot break them.

What people wanted from V+Native equivalent
Resource and drop multipliers-modifier resources more (also muchmore, less, muchless)
Portal restrictions removed-modifier portals casual, or -setkey noportals to go the other way
Raid frequency control-modifier raids more, less or none
Combat difficulty-modifier combat hard (casual through hardcore)
Keep items on death-modifier deathpenalty casual
No map, passive mobs, no build cost-setkey nomap, -setkey passivemobs, -setkey nobuildcost

The full list, including which values are legal for each category, is in the native world modifiers reference.

What native modifiers do not replace

Be honest with yourself about this before you rip V+ out. Modifiers are sliders on existing systems. They do not add building grid snapping, production speed tuning, stamina rework, inventory columns, or any of the finer V+ configuration. If those are why you run V+, native modifiers are not a migration path, they are a different feature set.

Migrating a V+ server to native modifiers

1. Read your existing config

Open valheim_plus.cfg and mark the settings you would actually miss. Most servers use a handful and inherit the rest as defaults.

2. Map them to launch parameters

A common "harder combat, gentler logistics" setup looks like this:

-modifier combat hard
-modifier resources more
-modifier portals casual
-modifier deathpenalty casual

Use the exact category and value names above. Numeric arguments such as -modifier resources 2 are not valid and the server will not apply them.

3. Remove the loader, not just the plugin

Delete BepInEx rather than disabling plugins, because the loader will try to load regardless. Then start the server once and confirm it boots clean before letting people back in.

Is Valheim Plus dead?

The original is deprecated and has not shipped since 2022. The Grantapher fork is alive and published for 1.0 on 10 September 2026. "Dead" is the wrong word; "you need the fork, not the original, and you need to test it" is closer.

Can console players join modified worlds?

Only if the modification is native world modifiers. Console clients cannot join a server running BepInEx, because the platform does not allow the DLL injection that a mod loader depends on.

Do I need to wipe my world to remove V+?

No. Remove the V+ files, set the equivalent native flags, and restart. Items that only existed because of modded stats revert to their base game values, so check anything unusual in your chests before you switch.

Which should a new server use?

Start native. It survives updates, it does not lock console players out, and it covers the common cases. Add V+ later only if you hit something it genuinely cannot do.

Next steps

On a Supercraft Valheim server, world modifiers are set from the panel rather than by editing a start script, and they persist across the automatic Steam updates that would otherwise leave a modded server behind.
