Vintage Story: Neolithic Survival & Progression
In Vintage Story, survival is a deep, granular simulation of primitive technology. Unlike other sandbox games where you can punch a tree to get wood, here you must manually shape every tool from flint, forage for nuggets, and respect the laws of thermodynamics and physics to survive your first week.
1. Knapping Tools
Find loose flint or hard stones on the ground. With two of them in hand, crouch (Shift) and right click the ground to place one, which starts Knapping. You must physically "click out" the pixels of the tool head you wish to create.
2. The Clay Age
Clay is your most vital early-game resource. It allows you to create storage vessels for food and cooking pots for stews. Red clay can turn up anywhere there is soil and enough rain, more often where the soil layer is thick; blue clay only at low elevations, not far above sea level. Neither occurs in sand, gravel or very cold regions.
3. Temporal Stability
The cyan gear between your health and hunger bars is your temporal stability. If it turns counter-clockwise, the ground you stand on is draining it: fog rolls in below 30% and you take damage below 13%. Move until it turns clockwise again. Our temporal mechanics guide has the numbers, including storms and rifts.
Your First 24 Hours: A Checklist
- Forage: Pick up every stick, stone, and flint you see. Pick berries and other wild food as you go.
- Craft: Knap a Flint Axe and a Flint Knife. Use the axe to get firewood and the knife to harvest dry grass.
- Fire: Craft a Firestarter from 1 dry grass and 2 sticks. It is not a chance roll: hold right click on a fuelled firepit for about 3 seconds and it lights (a pit kiln takes a little over 4).
- Shelter: Don't just build a box. Ensure your "home" is made of solid blocks; gravel and sand have gravity physics and fall if not supported (soil does not).
Mastering the Pit Kiln
To turn raw clay into hardened ceramic, you must fire it in a pit kiln:
- Dig a 1x1 hole in the ground: all four sides and the floor must be solid and not flammable, with open air above and no water.
- Place your raw clay items (Storage Vessel, Crock, etc.) inside.
- Add Dry Grass 2 at a time, 10 in all, then 8 Sticks.
- Add 4 pieces of Firewood (8 for a storage vessel). Peat bricks, charcoal, coke, lignite or bituminous coal also work.
- Light it with your firestarter and wait: 20 in-game hours with firewood, less with other fuel (charcoal or coke 10).
Finding Your First Copper
You cannot mine copper with stone tools: there is no stone pickaxe, and copper ore needs a pickaxe of tier 2. You must find Native Copper Nuggets on the surface.
| Tip | Description |
|---|---|
| Surface Indicators | Loose copper on the surface marks a shallow native copper deposit just below it. |
| The Crucible | 20 nuggets make one ingot's worth of copper. Melt them in a crucible over a firepit burning charcoal: copper melts at 1084 °C, charcoal burns at 1300 °C and firewood only reaches 700 °C. |
| Cast Molds | Pour molten copper into clay molds to create your first meaningful metal tools (Pickaxe, Hammer). |
Expert Tip: Mark every resource you find on your map (Press M). In Vintage Story, resources do not respawn, and finding your way back to a wild rye field or clay deposit is nearly impossible without map markers.
Want a harder Stone Age? The Primitive Survival mod adds fish baskets, trotlines, deadfalls and snares, irrigation and the Living Dead on top of everything above.
