Factorio: Server Versioning & Updates Guide
Keeping your Factorio server updated is essential for both security and access to the latest features like Space Age and Factorio 2.1. Because Factorio has a very active development cycle, you may frequently see "Version Mismatch" errors if your client and server aren't in sync.
1. The Update System
In the Supercraft Panel, the Update button triggers an automated script that pulls the latest binaries from Wube Software. A reboot is required to finish the process.
2. Stable vs. Experimental
You can choose between the Stable branch (tested and bug-free) and the Experimental branch (latest features but potential crashes). Most servers run Stable for long-term play.
3. Mod Compatibility
Major game updates break mods outright: 2.1.23 will not start with any mod whose info.json still declares factorio_version 2.0. Make sure each mod has a 2.1 release before the server moves.
How to Update Your Factorio Server
- Login to your Supercraft Panel.
- Navigate to the Server Management or Startup Settings tab.
- Locate the Version Branch setting and ensure it is set correctly (Stable is recommended).
- Click the Update button. The panel will download the new files and show a progress log.
- Once finished, click Restart.
Handling "Version Mismatch" Errors
If you cannot join your server after an update, check the following:
- Client Version: Right-click Factorio in Steam > Properties > Betas. Ensure your "Beta Participation" matches the server's branch (e.g., both on
experimental, or both on the2.0.77beta to stay on 2.0). - Mod Versions: If the server updated but your local mods didn't, use the "Sync Mods with Server" button in the Factorio Main Menu.
- Space Age Changes: Space Age is not a separate executable. The same headless build carries it as bundled mods (
space-age,elevated-rails,qualityand, on 2.1,recycler) thatmod-list.jsonswitches on. Ensure the expansion is enabled in your server settings if you plan to launch into orbit.
Updating with Mods Installed
| Scenario | Recommended Action |
|---|---|
| Minor Patch (0.X.1 → 0.X.2) | Safe to update immediately; mods rarely break. |
| Major Update (1.1 → 2.0) | Wait 24-48 hours for mod authors to release compatibility patches. |
| Major Update (2.0 → 2.1) | Back up the save first: Wube says a save or blueprint updated to 2.1 cannot be taken back to 2.0. Update or remove every mod still marked for 2.0, because 2.1.23 will not start with one. Steam moved clients to 2.1.23 on 23 October 2026, so players who stay on 2.0 need the 2.0.77 beta branch. |
| Experimental Release | Backup your save before updating; Experimental builds can corrupt data. |
Pro Tip: Always perform a manual backup of your world save (saves/myworld.zip) before clicking the Update button, especially if you are moving between major versions like 2.0 and 2.1.
