Best Minecraft Forge Mods (2026)
Last updated June 2026. Mods below target current Forge versions (1.20.1 and 1.21.x); always match each mod to your exact Minecraft + Forge version.
Forge is the longest-running Minecraft mod loader, with the deepest catalogue of tech, magic, and content mods. This is a curated, category-by-category list of the Forge mods worth installing in 2026 - the ones that actually solve a problem rather than just adding bloat. Every mod here is available on CurseForge.
Performance (install these first)
The single biggest "best mod" question on Forge is performance. Note: Sodium is Fabric-only - on Forge you want its port instead.
| Mod | Why |
| Embeddium (formerly Rubidium) | The Forge/NeoForge port of Sodium - a complete rendering rewrite for far higher FPS. The #1 Forge performance mod. |
| Oculus | Adds shader support (the Iris port) and pairs with Embeddium so you can run shaderpacks on Forge. |
| FerriteCore | Cuts memory (RAM) usage with no gameplay change - especially valuable on big modpacks and servers. |
| ModernFix | Faster load times, lower memory, and a long list of bug/lag fixes; safe on almost any pack. |
Must-have quality of life
| Mod | Why |
| JEI (Just Enough Items) | The essential recipe/item lookup. Once you run more than one mod, JEI is how you discover what everything crafts into. Effectively mandatory. |
| Jade | Shows what block/mob you're looking at and its info in a clean HUD tooltip. |
| AppleSkin | Shows hunger/saturation values so you can actually manage food. |
| Xaero's Minimap + World Map (or JourneyMap) | Real-time minimap, full-screen map, and waypoints so you can find your base again. |
| Mouse Tweaks & Controlling | Faster inventory management and a sane keybind search screen. |
Tech & automation
| Mod | Why |
| Create | Rotational machines, conveyors, trains and contraptions that stay true to the vanilla look. The standout build/automation mod. |
| Applied Energistics 2 (AE2) | Digital storage networks and autocrafting - the endgame storage solution. |
| Mekanism | Tiered industrial tech: ore-tripling, power generation, factories. |
| Immersive Engineering | Multiblock industrial machinery with a great aesthetic. |
World & content
| Mod | Why |
| Biomes O' Plenty | 80+ new biomes and richer world generation. |
| Alex's Mobs | Dozens of unique creatures with their own behaviours and drops. |
| Twilight Forest | A full new dimension with bosses, dungeons and a progression of its own. |
| Farmer's Delight | Deeper cooking and farming that pairs well with almost everything. |
A solid starter pack
If you just want a fast, comfortable modded world without curating dozens of mods: Embeddium + FerriteCore + ModernFix (performance), JEI + Jade + AppleSkin + a minimap (quality of life), then Create as your first big gameplay mod. Add content packs from there.
Running Forge mods on a server
For multiplayer, install a Forge server on the same Minecraft + Forge version as your client, drop the server-compatible mods into the server's mods folder, and make sure every player has the same client-side mods (Embeddium, JEI, maps, etc. are client-side; Create, AE2, Biomes O' Plenty must be on both). Mismatched versions are the number-one cause of "failed to connect / mod rejections" errors.
Want a managed Forge server? Supercraft runs Minecraft Forge and modpack servers with one-click setup, NVMe storage, daily backups, and 5 region options. Plans scale with your mod list and player count.
