Minecraft Density Enchantment (1.21+): Damage, Best Build & How to Get

Current for Java & Bedrock 1.21+. The one mace enchantment that turns fall distance into raw damage - and the one most guides explain wrong.

Short answer: Density is a mace-only enchantment that adds 0.5 HP (a quarter-heart) of bonus smash damage per block you have fallen, per level. At Density V that is +2.5 HP for every block of fall distance, applied on top of the mace's normal fall-scaling smash. It does nothing on a flat-ground swing - the bonus only fires on a smash attack (hitting while falling). It maxes at level V and is mutually exclusive with Breach: a single mace can carry Density or Breach, never both.

What Density actually does (exact numbers)

The mace already scales its damage with how far you fell before the hit - that is the base "smash" mechanic. Density stacks an extra, flat bonus on top of that, tied to the same fall distance:

LevelBonus per block fallenExample: bonus after a 10-block fall
Density I+0.5 HP (0.25 heart)+5 HP (2.5 hearts)
Density II+1.0 HP+10 HP (5 hearts)
Density III+1.5 HP+15 HP (7.5 hearts)
Density IV+2.0 HP+20 HP (10 hearts)
Density V+2.5 HP (1.25 hearts)+25 HP (12.5 hearts)

Two things to keep straight, because the wording trips people up: the bonus is measured in HP, not hearts (2 HP = 1 heart), and it is per block of the fall that lands the hit. The higher you drop before the smash connects, the bigger the multiplier - a Density V smash from a tall pillar or after a Wind Charge launch is where the enchantment earns its reputation.

Reality check: you will see clickbait claiming a Density V drop "deals 50 hearts" or one-shots anything. The honest version: damage is real and large at height, but it is the mace's fall-scaling plus Density's +2.5 HP/block - not an infinite multiplier. On flat ground a Density V mace adds zero over a plain mace.

Density vs Breach: the decision most guides get wrong

This is the part to get right. The mace has three signature enchantments - Density, Breach, and Wind Burst - and a lot of pages (including some hosting blogs) tell you to run a "Density V + Breach IV" mace. You cannot. Per the official Minecraft Wiki, Density is incompatible with Breach (and with Smite and Bane of Arthropods). One mace gets Density or Breach. Wind Burst works with either.

DensityBreach
What it does+0.5 HP/block fallen per level (raw damage)-15% target armor effectiveness per level
Max levelVIV (up to -60% armor)
Best forPvE - most mobs have no armor, so raw fall damage winsPvP - players wear armor, so piercing it wins
Stacks with Wind Burst?YesYes

The community consensus on r/Minecraft lands in the same place after a lot of back-and-forth: if you play mostly solo or on a PvE/survival server, Density is the pick because zombies, skeletons, the Warden and bosses carry no armor for Breach to chew through. If you fight other players, Breach pulls ahead because everyone is in netherite. Pick the mace to the server you actually play on.

The best mace build

For a PvE / survival world, the strongest, fully-compatible loadout is:

  • Density V - the damage core.
  • Wind Burst III - launches you back up on a hit, so you can chain a second smash without finding a new ledge. This is the synergy that makes Density terrifying: hit, get launched, fall, hit again.
  • Unbreaking III - durability.
  • Mending - repairs the mace with XP so it lasts forever (book only, from a Librarian - see our villager trades guide).
  • Fire Aspect II (optional) - a little extra burn between smashes.

For a PvP server, swap Density V for Breach IV and keep the rest. There is no "both" - that is the single most common mistake. For the wider picture of which enchant goes on every other item, see the Minecraft enchanting guide.

A clear hands-on walkthrough of getting and using Density (1.21+):

Want the full mace enchant rundown (Density, Breach and Wind Burst side by side)? The community video "Every Mace Enchantment in Minecraft" covers each one and is worth a watch before you commit a Density V book.

How to get Density (and Density V)

  • Enchanting table. Put a mace + lapis in a table ringed by 15 bookshelves for level-30 enchants - your best shot at high Density rolls. The table is random, so expect to re-roll.
  • Librarian villager. A Librarian of any level can offer a Density enchanted book. Re-roll the lectern (break and replace it) until the book you want appears - the cheapest reliable route to Density V. Full method in the villager trades guide.
  • Trial Chambers & Ominous Vaults. Since the mace itself drops in Trial Chambers, the chambers' vaults - especially ominous vaults - are a strong source of high-level (IV-V) mace books, including Density.

Apply the book on an anvil. Because Density is mutually exclusive with Breach, an anvil will simply refuse to merge the two onto one mace - that is the game stopping you from building the impossible loadout.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to stack Density + Breach. Impossible - they are mutually exclusive. Choose by PvE vs PvP.
  • Expecting ground damage. Density adds nothing unless you are falling on impact. No fall, no bonus.
  • Reading HP as hearts. "+2.5 per block" at Density V is 2.5 HP = 1.25 hearts per block, not 2.5 hearts.
  • Putting Smite/Sharpness on a mace. The mace does not take them; its damage path is Density (or Breach).

Frequently asked

What does Density do in Minecraft?

Density adds 0.5 HP of bonus smash damage per block fallen, per level, on the mace. At Density V that is +2.5 HP for every block of fall distance, applied only when you hit while falling (a smash attack). It does nothing on a flat-ground swing.

What is the max level of Density?

Density V. At V it adds +2.5 HP (1.25 hearts) per block fallen.

Is Density better than Breach?

For PvE, yes - mobs have no armor, so Density's raw fall damage wins. For PvP, Breach is better because it strips up to 60% of a player's armor. They are mutually exclusive, so a mace runs one or the other, never both.

Can you put Density and Breach on the same mace?

No. Density is incompatible with Breach (and with Smite and Bane of Arthropods). An anvil will not combine them. Wind Burst, however, stacks with either.

How do you get Density V?

The most reliable route is re-rolling a Librarian villager's lectern until a Density V book appears, then applying it on an anvil. Trial Chamber ominous vaults and a 15-bookshelf enchanting table are the other sources.

Does Density work without falling?

No. The bonus only applies to smash attacks - you must be falling when the hit connects. Wind Burst (which launches you up after a hit) is what lets you chain smashes without hunting for a ledge.

Test it on your own world

Density really clicks when you can build a pillar or a Wind-Charge launch pad and grind the mace combos with friends. Host your Minecraft server with Supercraft - always-on, so your Trial Chamber runs and XP farm for that Density V book keep going while you are offline. See also the enchanting guide and villager trades guide for the fastest path to the book.
