Minecraft Ore Distribution: Best Y-Levels for Every Ore
Current for 1.21+ (Java & Bedrock). The ore-distribution ranges have not changed since the 1.18 world-generation overhaul, so these levels are stable.
Every ore spawns in a height band, and most follow a triangle distribution - rarest at the edges of the band, most common at one peak Y-level. Mine at that peak and you find far more per hour. Press F3 (Java) or enable Show Coordinates (Bedrock) to read your current Y.

Best level for diamonds (the short answer)
Go to Y -59 for the highest diamond density, or Y -54 if you want to lose a little density in exchange for fewer lava deaths while branch mining. Below Y 0 all ore is the deepslate variant, which is slightly slower to break - bring an Efficiency pickaxe.
Mining tips
- Branch mine at the target Y: dig a long corridor and strike out 2-block tunnels every 3 blocks to expose the most stone.
- Fortune III multiplies diamond, redstone, lapis, coal, emerald and copper drops - enchant before a big trip.
- Carry a water bucket for lava, and torches to stop mob spawns in the corridor.
- Strip mining a 16x16 chunk at Y -59 down to bedrock is the most thorough method for diamonds + redstone together.
