Palworld Chromite Guide: Where to Find It and How to Use It

Chromite is a late-game metal added in the Feybreak update. It is buried underground on Feybreak Island and is used to smelt Hexolite, the material behind Palworld's highest-tier weapons, armor, and Pal Spheres. This guide covers where Chromite spawns, how to detect and mine it, and exactly what it crafts.

Need fuel for your refinery too? See our Palworld coal locations guide. Coal smelts ore into ingots for the weapons and armor you build alongside Hexolite gear.

What is Chromite?

  • Type: A metal buried underground. The in-game description notes it "can be detected with a Metal Detector on certain islands."
  • Where: Feybreak Island only, mainly inside caves and dungeons.
  • Primary use: Smelting Hexolite at the Gigantic Furnace.
  • Why it matters: Hexolite is required for the strongest end-game weapons, armor, and Pal Spheres.

Where to Find Chromite

Chromite is exclusive to Feybreak Island, the region added in the Feybreak update. You will not find it in the original starting areas. It does not appear as obvious surface rock the way ordinary ore does, so most players rely on a detection method rather than searching by eye.

The richest spots are inside Feybreak's caves and dungeons. A single cave commonly holds around three to four Chromite nodes, and those nodes respawn after a while, so a known cave can be revisited as a repeatable source. You will generally find more nodes underground than out in the open.

Chromite nodes are small underground deposits. With a Metal Detector equipped they are flagged on screen as you approach.

How to Get Chromite

1. Metal Detector

The Metal Detector is unlocked at Level 56 from the Technology screen and crafted at the Production Assembly Line II. Its recipe is:

  • 30x Plasteel
  • 100x Paldium Fragment
  • 30x Circuit Board
  • 20x Nightstar Sand

With it equipped, explore Feybreak and listen for the detector's beeps, which speed up as you close in on a buried node. Then mine the node to collect the Chromite.

2. Smokie (partner skill)

Smokie is a Dark-type Pal found in the northern part of Feybreak Island. Its partner skill works like a built-in Metal Detector: keep it active and it sniffs out and marks nearby Chromite nodes for you. Smokie's skill also increases the amount of Chromite you collect, and that bonus grows as Smokie levels up.

3. Silvegis (Alpha Pal)

Silvegis is a dragon-like Alpha Pal that spawns near the Shield Dragon Tunnel on Feybreak. It drops Chromite (roughly 2 to 3) when defeated. Silvegis can also hatch from Huge Dragon Eggs, so you can breed Silvegis and butcher the offspring for a steady, farmable Chromite supply.

4. Feybreak expeditions

Sending Pals on Feybreak expeditions returns Chromite among the rewards. A run takes roughly an hour and yields on the order of 30 to 50 Chromite alongside other materials, which makes it a passive top-up while you do other things.

What Chromite Crafts

Chromite has one core use: it is smelted into Hexolite at the Gigantic Furnace. Hexolite is the gateway to the best gear in the game, so Chromite feeds the entire end-game crafting chain indirectly.

Recipe Materials Station
Hexolite (x1) 5x Chromite, 12x Hexolite Quartz, 20x Ore Gigantic Furnace

Hexolite Quartz is a separate Feybreak material: it appears as shiny white crystal clusters on the island and is mined directly with a pickaxe (no detector needed). Ore is the common metal found across the map. Once you have Hexolite, it goes into the top-tier weapons, armor, and Pal Spheres in the technology tree.

Gigantic Furnace: you need this station to smelt Hexolite at all. Building it costs 200x Flame Organ, 150x Plasteel, 100x Polymer, and 20x Ancient Civilization Parts.

Efficient Mining Tips

  • Reach Level 56 first. That unlock gates both the Metal Detector and the Hexolite recipe, so there is no point hunting Chromite earlier unless you are stockpiling for later.
  • Prioritise caves. Underground areas pack more nodes than open ground, and each cave you clear respawns over time for repeat runs.
  • Use Smokie for volume. Its detection plus yield bonus stacks up far faster than blind searching, and it scales as the Pal levels.
  • Breed Silvegis for a farm. Hatching and butchering Silvegis turns Chromite into a renewable base activity instead of a manual cave crawl.
  • Run expeditions in the background. Idle Feybreak expeditions trickle in Chromite while you play normally.
  • Bring mining Pals. Mining-suitability Pals such as Digtoise or Anubis speed up node extraction once a deposit is found.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level do I need for Chromite?

You should be Level 56. That is when the Metal Detector and the Hexolite recipe unlock on the Technology screen, and Feybreak Island is end-game content.

Where is Chromite found?

Chromite is exclusive to Feybreak Island, the region added in the Feybreak update. It is buried underground, most densely inside the island's caves and dungeons, and is not found in the original starting biomes.

How do I locate Chromite if I can't see it?

Equip the Metal Detector (unlocked at Level 56) and follow its beeps, which quicken as you near a node. Alternatively, keep the Pal Smokie active: its partner skill marks nearby Chromite and increases how much you collect.

Can Chromite be farmed repeatedly?

Yes. Cave nodes respawn after a while, so known caves can be revisited. The Alpha Pal Silvegis drops Chromite when defeated and can be bred from Huge Dragon Eggs and butchered for a renewable supply. Feybreak expeditions also return Chromite passively.

What is Chromite used for?

Its main use is smelting Hexolite at the Gigantic Furnace, with 5 Chromite, 12 Hexolite Quartz, and 20 Ore per Hexolite. Hexolite then crafts the game's highest-tier weapons, armor, and Pal Spheres.

Is Chromite the same as Hexolite Quartz?

No. Chromite is a buried metal you detect and dig up. Hexolite Quartz is a separate Feybreak material that appears as white crystal clusters you mine directly with a pickaxe. Both, plus Ore, go into smelting Hexolite.
