Sons of the Forest Updates & Patch Notes
This page tracks the update information that matters to players and dedicated-server owners. It deliberately separates an official Steam announcement from community speculation: a seasonal calendar, “Part 2” expansion, or new server setting is not a fact until Endnight publishes it.

Verified update timeline
| Date | Official item | Server-owner takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| 22 February 2024 | PC 1.0 release | Use the PC dedicated-server tool and keep client/server builds compatible. |
| 15 January 2025 | Content patch with additions including rafts and defensive wall blueprints | Back up the world before updating the server and test an existing save. |
| 20–21 January 2025 | Follow-up hotfixes | Apply the current server build rather than stopping at the first content patch. |
| 3 October 2025 | Unity security update for the game and dedicated server | Update the server and clients together; do not rely on an old binary. |
What is not a verified seasonal roadmap
There is no reliable basis for presenting a recurring spring/summer/autumn/winter release calendar, a “Winter Expansion 1.5,” or a named “Second Artifact” update as official Sons of the Forest content. Those claims often mix fan theories, other survival games, or invented server configuration keys. The Part 2 fact check explains the common story-expansion claims, and the server-admin update checklist covers the safe response when a new patch is announced.
How to update a dedicated server safely
- Record the installed build and read the matching official announcement.
- Stop the server cleanly and copy the entire
SonsOfTheForestDSuser-data directory. - Update the dedicated-server files through SteamCMD or the host's verified update action.
- Check
dedicatedserver.cfgafter the update; it is JSON, notServerSettings.ini. - Start privately, load the save, and test joining before opening the server to the group.
The current server configuration and the required UDP ports are documented in the SOTF configuration reference. A patch does not automatically make guessed flags such as EnableRcon valid.
Patch-note checklist for players
- Check the date, author, and game/app the announcement names.
- Confirm whether it changes the dedicated-server tool as well as the client.
- Read hotfix posts after a major patch; early save or connection fixes may arrive separately.
- Keep a pre-update save until the updated world has loaded and been tested.
