Valheim Forge of Potential: Idol Odds, Drops and Tiers

Valheim Forge of Potential: idol odds, drops and which idol you need

Last verified: 11 October 2026, against the Valheim 1.0.17 game data (dedicated server build 25730807) and Iron Gate's patch notes up to 1.0.17.

The Forge of Potential is Valheim 1.0's way to push gear past its normal maximum level. Each attempt costs one idol and either raises the item by one level or destroys it: in 1.0.17 every idol gives a 65% chance of success and a 35% chance that the item breaks. This page covers where the forge spawns, which of the 16 idols each item needs, and which chests can drop each idol, all read from the shipped game data rather than from forum guesses.

TL;DR

  • Where: one Forge of Potential per world, in the Mountains, away from the biome's edges and at least 500 m from the world centre. It is marked on the map once someone has been close enough to generate it.
  • Cost: one idol per attempt, nothing else. The idol is used up whatever happens.
  • Odds: 65% the item gains one level, 35% it is destroyed. There is no downgrade outcome in 1.0.17.
  • On a break you get back 35% of the item's crafting materials plus 35% of the materials for its last upgrade, rounded up.
  • Which idol: the tier matches the item's material (Wooden to Bloodgold). Protection idols are for armour, shields and capes; Battle idols for weapons and tools.
  • Where idols come from: chests and pots in each biome hold that biome's idols, plus a small chance of the next tier.

Where the Forge of Potential spawns

The forge is a world location called AncientUpgradeStation in the game data. Its placement rules in 1.0.17:

RuleValueWhat it means for you
BiomeMountainNever in another biome
Biome areaMedianInside a mountain area, not on its edge
Distance from world centre500 m minimumNever within 500 m of the world centre
Candidate sitesUp to 10, at least 400 m apartThe world plans up to ten possible spots
UniqueYesThe first candidate that actually generates becomes the forge; the others are removed
Map iconShown once placedAfter any player has loaded the area, the forge gets a map icon
No build zone16 mYou cannot build a base right next to it

You will know it when you see it: statues of Thor and Freya, some of them broken, a runestone, and the forge itself. The runestone reads that Ingrid and Torgunn honoured the gods there; the gods "smiled upon Ingrid, granting her a great boon", while Torgunn's "blade shattered into pieces upon the altar". Hugin also warns that the forge "may just as easily shatter that which you seek to refine". It does not need a roof or a fire to work.

On a world started before 1.0, the placement code only uses zones that have never been generated, so the forge lands in a mountain area nobody has visited yet. If your old world has no forge after exploring fresh mountains, an admin can run genloc, whose help text is "regenerate all locations", from a world they host or remotely on a server where they are admin. It only adds locations to unexplored zones, and it is not a cheat command, so it does not touch anyone's achievements.

How refinement works

Stand at the forge and open the crafting panel. It lists every item in your inventory whose recipe you know and that has an idol requirement, at any level, with the warning "Maximum safe quality. Refinement may break your item." Press Attempt Refinement and the game rolls once:

RollChanceResultMessage
Success65%The item comes back one level higher, with the same style variant"[item] refined successfully to level [n]"
Break35%The item is destroyed; part of its materials are returned"[item] refinement failed and broke on level [n]"

All 16 idols carry the same numbers in 1.0.17: an upgrade chance of 0.65 and a break chance of 1.0. The code does contain a third outcome, dropping the item one level instead of destroying it, but it is only reached when an idol's break chance is below 1.0, so it never happens with the shipped idols. The only material the forge takes is the idol, one per attempt, success or not.

What you get back when an item breaks

For each normal crafting material, the forge returns 35% of the amount needed to craft the item plus the amount for the upgrade to its current level, rounded up. The idol is not returned.

Worked example, Iron Sword at level 4. The Iron Sword crafts from 20 iron, 2 wood and 3 leather scraps, and its level 4 upgrade costs 40 iron, 4 wood and 8 leather scraps. If the attempt at level 5 breaks it, you get back 21 iron, 3 wood and 4 leather scraps. If it succeeds, the sword goes from 73 to 79 slash damage and from 350 to 400 durability, because each level adds the item's normal per-level gain (6 slash and 50 durability for this sword). Armour gains its armour-per-level value in the same way.

The odds of a streak

Each attempt is independent, and a break ends the run, so the chance of climbing several levels on one item falls quickly:

Levels gained in a rowChanceIdols spent if it works
+165%1
+242.3%2
+327.5%3
+417.9%4
+511.6%5

The practical rule: only refine an item you could rebuild. If you crafted it with a cheated idol or material, the refined item is marked as cheated too, which pauses achievements while you carry it; our achievements and cheat flag guide explains why.

Which idol each item needs

There are 16 idols: eight material tiers, each in a Protection and a Battle version. They weigh 0.5, stack to 20 and can go through portals. This is the full mapping from the 1.0.17 recipes, for items you can actually craft:

IdolItems it refines

Bloodgold BattleEvery Nord, Frostfire and Thunderblood weapon except those listed above, Echo Spike, Spirit Caller, Northern Vengeance, Lightning Strike

Four Deep North items are cheaper than their tier. In 1.0.17 the Nord Atgeir takes a Bronze Battle idol, the Nord Knucklechains an Iron Protection idol, and the Nord Axe and Frostfire Axe a Black Metal Battle idol, while the other Nord and Frostfire weapons take Bloodgold. That is how the recipes ship today; it may well be corrected in a later patch, so do not plan a build around it.

Where to find each idol

Idols come from the drop tables of chests and pots. Each table holds its own biome's idol tier at a higher weight, Protection usually twice as likely as Battle, and the next tier up at a much lower weight. The chance column below comes from running each chest's drop table, exactly as the game rolls it (number of items, weights, one of each), 200,000 times.

Ashlands pots and Morgen hole piles can also drop Black Marble idols, and the pots occasionally Flametal ones. Chest contents are rolled once, the first time the chest loads, and then stored, so revisiting a looted chest gives nothing new.

What this means in practice:

  • Bloodgold idols really are rare. No container in the table holds Bloodgold as its main tier. The best source is the ancient chest in Mörkhalla, at about 4% for Protection and 2% for Battle per chest; everywhere else it is around 1%.
  • Battle idols are scarcer than Protection idols almost everywhere, usually half as likely. The Meadows buried chest is the one exception.
  • The best single chest is Hildir's Sealed Tower: its small loot table means it always holds an idol, a Black Metal one 94% of the time and both Black Metal idols about 35% of the time. That covers Padded armour, Lox gear and every Black Metal weapon.
  • Frost caves and charred fortresses are the other high-yield sources for Silver and Black Marble idols.

Running the forge on a server

  • There is one forge for the whole world, so on a dedicated server everyone travels to the same place. Put a portal near it, outside the 16 m no-build zone.
  • Back the world up before a refining session if your group would rather roll back than lose a weapon. The backup guide shows where the files are. Rolling back undoes everything else that happened in that world too, so agree it with the group first.
  • Patch 1.0.12 (11 September 2026) fixed the forge unlocking recipes it should not. If someone on your server learned recipes early from it before that patch, that is where they came from.

Frequently asked questions

What are the odds at the Forge of Potential?

In Valheim 1.0.17 every idol gives a 65% chance that the item gains one level and a 35% chance that the item is destroyed. There is no downgrade outcome, and the idol is used up either way.

Where is the Forge of Potential in Valheim?

In the Mountains, inside a mountain area rather than on its edge and at least 500 m from the world centre. Each world gets one, and it gets a map icon once a player has been close enough to generate it.

Where do Bloodgold idols drop?

From Deep North village chests, Mörkhalla chests and the Viking shipwreck chest, at about 1% per chest. The ancient chest in Mörkhalla is the best source at about 4% for Protection and 2% for Battle idols.

Do you get anything back when the Forge of Potential breaks an item?

Yes. You get 35% of the item's crafting materials plus 35% of the materials for its last upgrade, rounded up. The idol is not returned.

Can you use the Forge of Potential before an item is fully upgraded?

Yes. The forge lists items at any level, but it carries the same 35% break chance, while the workbench upgrade below the maximum level is free of risk. Upgrade at the workbench first.
