VEIN Server Requirements: 8 GB Baseline, CPU, Disk & Sizing

VEIN Server Requirements and Sizing

The public VEIN dedicated-server reference gives a useful starting point: a 64-bit system, Windows as the tested path, and at least 8 GB of memory to start. That is a baseline, not a universal player-cap guarantee. Early Access builds, explored world state, zombie activity, saves, and other services can change the real requirement.

Start here

  • Use the current dedicated-server package and branch.
  • Start with the reference 8 GB memory guidance, then measure peak use.
  • Prefer fast SSD storage and a modern CPU with headroom.
  • Test the largest expected group on the actual world.

What drives resource use?

FactorWhat to observe
PlayersCPU, memory, network traffic, and whether delay is shared by every player.
World ageSave size, restart duration, disk use, and behavior away from the starting area.
Zombies and activityCPU during busy scenes and whether the current build exposes a relevant control.
Backups and updatesDisk latency, free space, and whether scheduled work overlaps with play.
Mods or custom contentLoad time, memory, support status, and whether every client has the same package.

CPU, memory, and storage choices

  • CPU: prioritize a modern, consistently available core rather than a vague “gaming CPU” label.
  • Memory: leave room for the OS, logs, backups, and other server processes beyond the 8 GB starting guidance.
  • Disk: SSD/NVMe helps startup, saves, and backups; it does not cure a simulation bottleneck.
  • Network: stable UDP reachability matters more than a headline bandwidth number for a small group.
  • Isolation: avoid heavy unrelated jobs during peak play and save windows.

Measure before upgrading

  1. Record branch, build, world, player count, and server process.
  2. Measure a quiet session and then the busiest expected activity.
  3. Record CPU, memory, disk latency, warnings, save duration, and disconnects.
  4. Compare with a fresh test world on the same machine.
  5. Change one resource or setting and repeat.

Ports and reachability

The dedicated-server reference lists UDP 7777 for game traffic and UDP 7778 for query traffic, with optional TCP 7777 for RCON. Confirm the current package and provider mapping before opening anything; a listed server is not proof that the game port works.
