Sons of the Forest Large Builds and Server Lag
There is no official “Build Cleanup Utility (BCU)” documented by Endnight for the dedicated server, and the current configuration guide does not expose commands for compacting structures, batching mutant AI, or purging abandoned builds. Do not run copied /bcu commands or paste guessed cleanup keys into a live world.
Diagnose the real bottleneck
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| Only one player has low FPS near the base | Client graphics, overlays, drivers, and local hardware. |
| Every player rubber-bands near a large build | Host CPU/RAM, storage latency, process logs, and network loss. |
| World loads or saves slowly | Disk space, backup jobs, save duration, and the active user-data path. |
| Issue began after a patch or mod | Update compatibility and reproduction on a clean copy. |
Safe ways to reduce risk
- Back up the complete
SonsOfTheForestDSdirectory before removing anything. - Remove abandoned structures manually in-game with the group that owns the world.
- Test a smaller copy and one change at a time; never “clean” the only save with an unknown tool.
- Use the documented
SaveInterval,IdleTargetFramerate, andActiveTargetFrameratecontrols only as described in the JSON config guide. - Measure CPU, RAM, save duration, and reconnects during a real session.
Do not confuse community mods with official server features
A third-party client or server mod may advertise cleanup or AI changes, but that is a separate compatibility and security decision. The official SOTF dedicated-server guide does not make such a tool part of the base server. See the mod compatibility warning and the supported performance checks.
