Best Unturned Mods, Maps & Plugins in 2026
Short answer: Unturned modding in 2026 splits three ways. For maps, California 2 became official on April 30, 2026 (see our California 2 guide โ our most-trafficked Unturned page); Russia, Greece, PEI, Hawaii, and Yukon are the other anchor official maps. For plugins, install OpenMod (the actively-maintained successor to RocketMod) โ it auto-patches RocketMod plugins on the fly, so Uconomy and Uconomy Essentials still work. For survival QoL, Pure Hardmode + More Vanilla Crafts + Purify by Boiling is the Reddit-canonical PvE stack.
Unturned's modding scene is one of the most active in survival gaming, and 2026 brought two major shifts: California 2 went official (no longer a Workshop mod), and OpenMod has effectively replaced RocketMod as the primary plugin framework. This guide reflects both โ the post-California-2 official map landscape, the OpenMod-led plugin stack, and the community QoL mods that survived the churn.
Workshop & Official Maps
The Big Shift: California 2 Went Official
Smartly Dressed Games released California 2 as an official map on April 30, 2026 โ ending the "curated Workshop maps" era that started in late 2019. What used to be the most-downloaded community map is now first-class content. If you're starting a new server, California 2 is the obvious choice โ see our California 2 map guide (covering progression, hidden locations, vehicle spawns) and California 2 admin guide (settings, server tuning).
Official Maps Worth Hosting
- California 2 (April 30, 2026) โ the new flagship, urban + suburban + agricultural mix, best for groups that liked the original California's vibe.
- Russia โ the first map to ship the Liberator vehicle and the NPC system. Strong story content, large playable area, classic Unturned-survival pacing.
- Greece โ Mediterranean naval map. Multiple islands connected by boats, Greek military gear set, unique storyline. Boats are essential for traversal โ different gameplay loop from continental maps.
- PEI (Prince Edward Island) โ Canada's first official map. Smaller, focused, great for new players or single-session co-op.
- Hawaii โ Tropical island chain, water + jungle combat, distinct loot economy.
- Yukon โ Arctic survival; cold management mechanic matters more than on other maps.
- Arid โ Desert/wasteland map. We cover Arid-specific progression at our Arid progression guide.
- Buak โ Newer official addition with custom quests; see Buak secrets and hidden locations for end-game content.
Top Workshop Community Maps (Still Worth It Post-California-2)
- A6 Polaris โ One of the highest-rated community maps. Snowy military theme, complex base-building zones, strong PvP map.
- Carpat โ Eastern-European/Carpathian-themed map. Heavily-modded asset packs, dense forests, lore-driven progression.
- Belgium โ Western European map with civilian + military zones, popular for RP/Semi-RP servers.
- Italy โ Mediterranean alternative to Greece, urban density, different vehicle economy.
- Pearl Island โ Tropical/Caribbean map, naval combat focus, smaller scale.
Plugin Framework: OpenMod (2026 Default)
If you came here from a 2024 guide expecting RocketMod, here's the 2026 reality:
| Framework | Status | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| OpenMod | Actively maintained; spiritual successor to RocketMod by one of its original maintainers | Install this as primary. Auto-patches RocketMod plugins. |
| RocketMod (vanilla) | No longer actively maintained | Don't install standalone; OpenMod patches it. |
| RocketModFix | Community fork maintaining RocketMod compatibility | Optional fallback if OpenMod's patches don't cover a specific legacy plugin. |
| LDM | Community fork (LDM Community) | Optional fallback. Active plugin list at ldm-community.github.io/pluginlist |

The 10 Best Plugins (OpenMod / RocketMod-Compatible)
1. Uconomy
Type: Server-side. Why install: Foundation economy plugin.
Adds a configurable in-game currency system. Players earn currency for killing zombies, completing quests, or via admin commands. Almost every modded Unturned server runs Uconomy as the economy substrate โ most other gameplay plugins (shops, kits, gambling) integrate with it.
2. Uconomy Essentials
Type: Server-side. Why install: Extends Uconomy with the features it's missing.
Adds passive salaries at set intervals, XP-to-currency exchange, PvP kill rewards, and admin-grant commands. Currency every time you kill a player makes it especially valuable for PvP servers. Strictly an extension โ install Uconomy first, then this on top.
3. AviZebra
Type: Server-side. Why install: Whitelisting that actually works.
Whitelist management โ control who can connect to your server via Steam ID, group membership, or invite code. Required infrastructure for any private/community server. Maintained on GitHub by RocketModPlugins.
4. PvP / PvE Stats Plugin
Type: Server-side. Why install: Player progression and ranking.
Tracks kills, deaths, K/D, captures, base-raid stats, and surfaces them in a UI overlay. Configurable rewards for kill streaks. Multiple variants exist (ImperialPlugins paid, several free options on uEdit) โ pick by feature density. Essential for PvP servers running leaderboards.
5. AdvancedKits
Type: Server-side. Why install: Loadouts on a cooldown.
Lets admins define starter kits, VIP kits, role-based loadouts. Players claim them via in-game command (e.g. /kit starter) on configurable cooldowns. Eliminates the early-game loot grind on PvP servers where everyone needs equal opportunity.
6. AntiCheat
Type: Server-side. Why install: Vanilla BattlEye isn't enough.
Several anti-cheat plugins exist โ they layer on top of BattlEye to catch the cheats BattlEye misses (movement hacks, weapon-stat manipulation, teleport exploits). Worth installing on any public server above 8 players. Specific plugin choice depends on your sub-community (PvP servers usually use ImperialPlugins' paid offering).
7. Shop / Vehicle Shop Plugins
Type: Server-side. Why install: Currency sinks for Uconomy.
Lets admins set up vendor NPCs or chat commands for buying items/vehicles in exchange for Uconomy currency. The mod that makes Uconomy currency actually feel valuable rather than just a number. Pairs naturally with Uconomy + Uconomy Essentials.
8. PlayerInfoLib
Type: Server-side. Why install: Persistence layer for other plugins.
Library plugin that stores player data persistently โ Steam IDs, names, last-seen, custom flags. Other plugins depend on PlayerInfoLib as their data backend. Install as part of any plugin stack that needs to remember anything across server restarts.
9. ChatMod / TextChat++
Type: Server-side. Why install: Chat moderation and channels.
Chat-channel management (global / local / faction / trade), mutes, badwords filter, named ranks in chat. Vanilla Unturned chat is functional but limited; a chat-mod plugin makes a community server feel managed.
10. RealVehicleSync / Vehicle Improvements
Type: Server + client (depending on variant). Why install: Vanilla vehicle sync is rough at high pings.
Multiple plugins exist that improve client-server sync of vehicle positions, especially at >100ms ping. Reduces the "the car teleported" experience that hurts late-game PvP. Variants on uEdit and ImperialPlugins.
QoL Workshop Mods (Survival / PvE Focus)
These are pure Workshop mods โ they don't need OpenMod or RocketMod. The set Reddit's r/unturned recommends for "make PvE feel like a real survival game":
11. Pure Hardmode
Increases zombie damage, reduces healing, makes vanilla recipes harder to craft. The mod r/unturned's "best mods to expand gameplay" thread cites as the difficulty baseline for PvE survival runs. Pairs with the next two.
12. More Vanilla Crafts
Adds dozens of new vanilla-styled crafting recipes โ purification, primitive tools, more food preservation methods, advanced metalworking. Doesn't break the vanilla aesthetic; just makes crafting deep enough for a 100-hour playthrough. "Makes it feel more like a survival" per the Reddit thread.
13. Purify by Boiling
Adds boiling as a water-purification method. Solves the vanilla "you have a lake but can't drink from it" problem with realistic survival mechanic. Compatible with Pure Hardmode and More Vanilla Crafts; the three are commonly recommended as a stack.
14. Item Sorting Mod (community-built)
A community-built item-sorting mod has been actively developed in 2026 (the author mentioned on r/unturned that they made it because "it is really annoying" not having one). Solves the late-game storage-management headache โ auto-sort chests by item category. Worth searching Workshop for the latest community-maintained version.

| California 2 community | California 2 (official map) + OpenMod + Uconomy + Uconomy Essentials + AdvancedKits + AntiCheat | Anchor on the new official map; minimum-viable plugin stack |
| Solo PvE / friend group | Pure Hardmode + More Vanilla Crafts + Purify by Boiling + Item Sorting Mod + (single Workshop map of choice) | Pure Workshop QoL; no plugins; runs on a self-hosted listen server |
Installation Walkthrough
Workshop Mods (Maps + QoL)
- Subscribe to mods on Steam Workshop.
- Steam auto-downloads to your client.
- For a dedicated server, locate the server's Workshop cache and copy the same mod IDs (see our Workshop install fix guide if you hit the canonical install path issue).
- Every connecting client must have the same Workshop subscriptions or they'll see an asset-bundle version mismatch error.
Plugins (OpenMod + RocketMod)
- Stop your dedicated server.
- Install OpenMod per our plugin guide โ it's a NuGet-style install; OpenMod auto-loads on server boot.
- Drop plugin .dll files into the OpenMod plugins folder (or use OpenMod's
installcommand for NuGet packages). - For legacy RocketMod plugins: drop them into
Rocket/Plugins/as before โ OpenMod auto-patches them on load. - Restart the server. Failed plugin loads appear in the console with stack traces.
Common Mistakes
- Installing RocketMod standalone in 2026. RocketMod itself is no longer maintained. Install OpenMod first; it patches RocketMod for compatibility. The vanilla RocketMod download is a 2024-era artifact.
- Mismatched Workshop subscriptions between client and server. Causes asset-bundle version mismatch errors at connection. See our version-mismatch fix.
- Stacking item-pack mods until the server runs out of RAM. Each Workshop item pack loads all assets on world boot. 8-15 mods is the practical comfortable ceiling on a 4 GB server; beyond that, expect long load times and occasional OOM crashes.
- Auto-updating Unturned on a production modded server. SDG patches occasionally break internal APIs. AviRockets famously died with the 3.24.4.0 update. Pin plugin versions and don't auto-update Unturned until you've sandbox-tested.
- Confusing AviRockets with AviZebra. AviRockets has been broken since July 2024 and is not maintained. AviZebra (whitelisting) is a different, working plugin from the same author umbrella. Don't install AviRockets in 2026.
