Unturned Pottery Kiln Guide: Clay to Brick Crafting (2026)

Unturned Pottery Kiln Guide: Clay to Brick Crafting

Last updated: May 2026 · Verified on 3.26.2.0 Wild Harvest

Quick answer: The Pottery Kiln (added in Wild Harvest, April 2026) fires clay into bricks. Find clay near rivers and lake shores, build the kiln at Workbench tier 1 (8 Stone + 4 Stick), place clay inside, wait ~30 seconds per brick. Bricks slot between cinder block and metal in wall HP class, making them the new mid-tier raid wall.

Where to Find Clay

  • River banks: most rivers on Wild Harvest-updated maps have clay nodes within a few tiles of the water.
  • Lake shores: especially around small inland lakes.
  • Pond edges: smaller bodies of water often have higher-density clay clusters.
  • Visual cue: look for sandy/wet brown ground texture. Different from regular dirt.
  • Tool: any melee or fists work. Yield: 2-4 Clay per node.

Clay nodes respawn over time. A single trip to a river usually yields 30-60 Clay if you sweep both banks.

The brick fills a real gap: pre-Wild Harvest there was a big jump from cinder to metal. Bricks give a middle option that's craft-time-gated rather than rare-resource-gated.

Optimal Build Strategy

  1. Lay foundations and floors in cinder block. Cheap, fast, doesn't need to be tough.
  2. Brick the perimeter walls. Especially the door wall and any side a raider might approach.
  3. Save metal for the vault. The room with your highest-tier loot still gets metal.
  4. Run the kiln 24/7. Stack 20 clay before bed; wake up to 20 fresh bricks. The kiln keeps firing while offline on dedicated servers.

Tips

  • Build the kiln in a secured room. Active clay inside the kiln is lootable if a raider breaches.
  • Two kilns > one large kiln. Each kiln has the ~20 clay capacity. Two kilns double throughput at low extra cost.
  • Don't transport bricks across the map. Heavy. Build kiln near where you're laying brick walls.
  • Bricks craft into other items too: some Workshop mods add brick-tier furniture and decorative blocks.

Common Issues

Clay node won't drop anything

Confirm you're hitting a real clay node (sandy/wet texture, not regular dirt). Some maps mistakenly textured similar dirt patches; only true clay nodes drop clay items.

Pottery Kiln recipe doesn't appear

Workbench tier 1 prerequisite. Build a Workbench (different from Carpentry Bench), place it adjacent, and the Pottery Kiln recipe should unlock.

Kiln cycle stuck mid-fire

Usually a server hiccup mid-cycle. Take the partial item out, put it back; the cycle restarts. If persistent, check the server log for chunk-streaming errors.

Bricks don't connect to existing walls

Brick walls use the same snap grid as other walls but require the foundation to support brick HP class. Cinder foundations may not accept brick walls; rebuild the foundation in metal first if structural.
