Valheim on PS5, Switch 2, and Crossplay (Sept 9, 2026): The Complete Setup Guide
Last verified: June 14, 2026. Valheim 1.0 launches September 9, 2026, debuting on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 with full crossplay across all platforms.
Short answer: Yes, Valheim has full crossplay across every platform. With the 1.0 launch on September 9, 2026, the same world is shared by PC (Steam + Microsoft Store), Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S + Game Pass, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Iron Gate Studio and Coffee Stain Publishing confirmed the date at the PC Gaming Show 2026.

The September 9, 2026 Convergence
Iron Gate framed 2026 as Valheim's biggest year since launch. At the PC Gaming Show 2026, Iron Gate Studio and Coffee Stain Publishing confirmed that everything lands together on September 9, 2026:
- Deep North biome. The final biome on the roadmap: a frozen region with Gammeltrolls on the surface, underground areas inhabited by Elakingar, abandoned villages, and icy mesas.
- Version 1.0. Deep North's arrival ends Early Access. Valheim moves from "in development" to "released" after five years.
- PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Both consoles debut on launch day alongside PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with full crossplay across every platform from day one.
Crossplay Setup: How to Play Together
Valheim crossplay uses the Join Code system. Two ways to play together:
Path A: Player-Hosted World (Join Code)
- One player starts a world with "Start Server" toggled ON.
- "Crossplay" is on by default. Confirm it is enabled in the start-server toggle.
- Once in-game, the Join Code appears in the pause menu (or via L3 on a controller).
- Share the code with friends on any platform.
- They open Valheim, go to Join Game, "Join by Code", and enter it.
Join Code games only run while the hosting player is in the world. When they log off, the world is unreachable.
Path B: Dedicated Server (24/7)
A dedicated server hosts the world independently of any player session. Anyone can join at any time, and progress is preserved without one player needing to be online. Because console players cannot host on the console, a rented Valheim dedicated server with the crossplay flag enabled is the cleanest way to keep one persistent world that PC, Xbox, PS5, and Switch 2 friends all share.
- Rent a Valheim dedicated server (or run your own with the Valheim Dedicated Server tool from Steam).
- Set the server name, password, and crossplay flag in the server config.
- Share the server's connection details: name + password for the in-game browser, or direct IP for direct connect.
- Each player connects from their platform using the same connection info.
PS5 and Switch 2 players can join dedicated servers but cannot host one on the console itself. The same was true at Xbox launch. Use the in-game Multiplayer menu and Direct Connect via the server's address.
PS5 DualSense Controls
The PS5 version uses DualSense haptic feedback for immersion (the rumble when you chop wood or draw a bow). Default control mapping:
| Action | Button | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Attack / Chop | R2 | Hold for heavy attack with some weapons |
| Block / Parry | L2 | Timing matters for the parry stagger window |
| Interact / Use | Square | Open chests, doors, NPCs |
| Jump | X (Cross) | |
| Run | L3 (left stick click) | Consumes stamina |
| Sneak | R3 (right stick click) | Critical for hunting deer and avoiding raid triggers |
| Inventory | Triangle | |
| Build / Hammer mode | D-Pad Up | Select hammer first |
| Map | Touchpad | Tap for map, hold for full view |
Performance Modes (PS5)
The PS5 build is expected to ship with the same two-mode pattern as the Xbox Series X version, refined for PS5 hardware:
- Quality Mode - 4K resolution at 30 FPS. High-fidelity shadows and dense foliage. Best for solo exploration and screenshot-mode players.
- Performance Mode - 1440p (upscaled) at 60 FPS. Recommended for combat, multiplayer, and especially Mistlands/Ashlands where particle effects pile up.
Most players default to Performance Mode for PvP and group play; Quality Mode shines for first-time biome reveals where the visual richness matters more than frame rate.
Console Commands on PS5
The developer console is hidden by default on PS5 (and Xbox). To access it:
- You must be an admin on the server (your Steam64-equivalent ID added to
adminlist.txt). - From the pause menu, hold
L1 + R1 + Triangle + Squaresimultaneously. - The console opens. Use standard commands:
devcommands- enable debug commandsgod- toggle godmodepos- show your coordinatestp x z- teleport to coordinates
For a full list of commands see the all cheat commands article and use devcommands.
Crossplay Server Configuration
If you are hosting a dedicated server, the crossplay flag is enabled in the launch command:
./valheim_server.x86_64 -name "MyServer" -port 2456 \
-world "MyWorld" -password "yourpass" \
-crossplay -public 1
-crossplayenables the PlayFab cross-platform layer (required for Xbox/PS5 clients)-port 2456is the default; firewall must allow 2456-2458 UDP-public 1lists the server in the in-game browser;-public 0= direct-connect only-passwordminimum 5 characters; can be empty for fully-open servers
Managed Valheim hosts ship the crossplay flag enabled by default. Verify in the panel's Config tab if you are unsure.
Common Crossplay Questions
"My PS5 friend cannot find our server"
The PS5 and Switch 2 builds go live with 1.0 on September 9, 2026; if you are reading this before that date, your console friend cannot connect yet. Once live, check that the server has the -crossplay flag, and have them try direct connect (server IP + port 2456) rather than the in-game browser.
"Do PS5 and PC characters share the same save?"
No. Characters are tied to the platform account. A Steam character cannot be transferred to a PSN account, and vice versa. You can have separate characters on each platform that play on the same world via the dedicated server, but the character itself does not cross over.
"Will Xbox saves transfer to PS5?"
No cross-progression for Valheim. Each platform's saves stay on that platform. The world hosted on a dedicated server is shared; the individual character files are not.
"Is mod support available on PS5?"
No. The console builds (Xbox, PS5, and Switch 2) are vanilla-only. BepInEx mods are PC-only, the same constraint as on Xbox. Server-side rules and difficulty modifiers do apply to all clients regardless of platform.
"What is the difference between Microsoft Store, Game Pass, and Steam Valheim for crossplay?"
All three PC builds can play together on the same server. Microsoft Store and Game Pass for PC ship the Microsoft Store-distributed copy, which connects through Microsoft's matchmaking but still joins the same PlayFab-backed crossplay session as Steam clients.
