Valheim Deep North Server Prep: Backup, Staging & Update Steps

Valheim 1.0 and the Deep North arrive on September 9, 2026. This guide is for server admins who need a safe update path: protect the current world, test the new build, decide whether to start fresh, and bring mods back without turning launch night into a blind rollback.

Last verified: August 20, 2026. The official 1.0 FAQ says existing saves remain usable, while new content is generated in unexplored areas and a new world is recommended for the fullest experience.

Do not use an unverified “world optimizer” or claimed hardware minimum as a launch requirement. The useful preparation is measurable: backups, a staging copy, a known-good configuration, a real join test, and a rollback plan.

Before you touch the live server

  1. Record the current game branch, launch arguments, world name, player count, mod profile, and resource baseline.
  2. Take a manual backup and confirm the world files can be downloaded and identified as a matching pair.
  3. Export the configuration, admin list, password policy, and mod versions separately from the world backup.
  4. Tell players when the maintenance window starts and which world plan you are using after the update.

Stage the update

Use a second server or a restored copy when possible. Start with the vanilla server build, load the candidate world, and test the path a player actually uses:

  • server starts without dependency or version errors;
  • a fresh client can join;
  • the world loads and a player can move, build, and save;
  • restart and reconnect preserve the save;
  • crossplay settings work for the platforms your group uses.

Keep the old world or start fresh?

ChoiceUse it whenRemember
Keep the old worldYour community values existing builds and progressionThe new biome only appears in unexplored areas of that world
Start a new worldYou want a clean 1.0 progression and full new-biome explorationKeep the old save available rather than deleting it
Run bothYou have a returning community and want continuity plus a fresh campaignExplain which world is the launch headline and monitor capacity

The Deep North world compatibility guide explains the save decision in more detail. Use the Valheim seed viewer before committing to a fresh seed.

Bring mods back in a controlled order

Run the first successful boot without optional mods. Then restore the BepInEx and Thunderstore stack in small groups, restarting and testing after each change. Keep the previous profile and a clean rollback snapshot. If a plugin fails, remove the last change first instead of changing the world and the mod stack at the same time.

Use Best Valheim Mods in 2026 for the current mod categories and Install Mods for the server/client sync workflow.

Measure capacity instead of guessing

There is no single RAM number that is correct for every 1.0 server. Watch CPU, memory, disk space, save duration, and join latency during staging with the largest realistic player count. Leave headroom for new exploration and your mod stack. If the baseline is already close to the plan limit, resize before launch and keep the same world rather than waiting for a production failure.

Launch-day sequence

  1. Stop new joins and announce maintenance.
  2. Take the final manual backup.
  3. Update server and clients to the same stable branch.
  4. Boot vanilla and complete a real join, save, restart, and reconnect test.
  5. Open the selected world and publish the join instructions.
  6. Restore mods gradually and keep the rollback point until the community has played normally.
