Valheim on Switch 2: Release Date, Crossplay and Servers
The short answer
Yes. Valheim launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 9, 2026 - the same day the game leaves Early Access as Version 1.0 with the final Deep North biome. It arrives with full crossplay to PC, Xbox and the also-new PS5 version, so a Switch 2 player can join the same world as everyone else from day one.

What is NOT confirmed yet
Price and editions
No Switch 2 price has been announced, and no physical edition has been confirmed. Treat any listing you see before Nintendo eShop pre-orders open as a placeholder.
Performance targets
Iron Gate has not published resolution or frame-rate figures for the Switch 2 build. Nothing credible exists to quote, so we do not quote anything.
Mods
No console version of Valheim has ever supported client mods (BepInEx is a PC loader), and nothing announced suggests Switch 2 changes that. Server-side world modifiers still apply to every player who joins, console included.
Save transfer
Whether a character or world can move between Switch 2 and other platforms has not been detailed. We will update this page when it is.
How multiplayer works for Switch 2 players
Valheim's crossplay runs on the same backend the Xbox version has used since 2023, and it works the same way on the new platforms:
- Joining friends uses the Join Code system - the host or server shows a code, you enter it, no platform matching required.
- Dedicated servers are joinable from console if the server runs with its crossplay flag enabled. A Steam-only server is invisible to console players. Full setup detail: the PS5, Switch 2 and crossplay setup guide.
- Hosting is the console limitation: a Switch 2 (like PS5 and Xbox) cannot run the dedicated server app. Your world is online only while a player hosts it, unless a PC or a rented server hosts it 24/7 - the options are laid out in Valheim dedicated servers on console.
- One dependency worth knowing: crossplay sessions rely on an online relay service. When it has a bad day, crossplay joins fail while Steam-to-Steam keeps working - see are Valheim servers down? for how that failure looks and the workarounds.
Why September 9 is bigger than a port
The Switch 2 release is not a late port of an old build - it is part of the 1.0 launch itself. September 9 brings the Deep North biome, the end of Early Access, and two new platforms on the same day. If you run a server for a mixed group, the practical consequence is that your player count can jump overnight: the friends who never had a gaming PC get access at the exact moment the game is most worth returning to. The Deep North readiness guide covers preparing an existing world for the update.
