The Isle: Server Not Showing Up? Check the Branch First

"The server browser is empty", "my friend's server is not on the list", "I can't find any servers" - in The Isle these are usually the same problem wearing different clothes, and it is fixed in Steam, not on the server.

Cause 1: your client is on the Legacy branch (the most common one)

The Isle ships as two branches that are effectively different games. Evrima is the actively developed build, where the playerbase and almost all servers live. Legacy is the old build, frozen years ago - and it is what a fresh Steam install gives you by default.

A Legacy client cannot see Evrima servers, and an Evrima client cannot see Legacy servers. There is no error message; the servers simply never appear. If you just installed the game and the browser looks dead, this is almost certainly why.

The fix:

  1. In Steam, right-click The Isle in your Library and open Properties.
  2. Open the Betas tab.
  3. In the dropdown, select evrima.
  4. Let Steam download the update (Evrima is a separate multi-GB build), then start the game.

Everyone joining a server must do this once. If you run a server for a group, put the four steps above in your Discord welcome channel - it will save you the same conversation every week.

Cause 2: version mismatch after patch day

Evrima updates regularly, and after a patch the server and every client must be on the same build. If you can suddenly no longer see a server you played on yesterday, restart Steam so the client updates, and give the server operator time to update their side. On a managed Isle server the server side updates automatically when the branch updates.

Cause 3: the server browser is just slow

The in-game list can take a while to populate, especially right after the game starts. Before assuming anything is broken, try joining by direct IP and port - if the direct connection works, the server is fine and the list is merely catching up.

Cause 4: the server is mid-update or mid-restart

During an update or a scheduled restart a server drops off the list for a few minutes. This is normal. If you are the operator, announce restart windows; if you are a player, wait five minutes before reporting it.

For server operators: reduce these reports to zero

Three habits eliminate nearly all "can't see the server" traffic in an Isle community:

  • Pin the branch-switch steps where every new member sees them.
  • Update promptly after patch day, or run hosting that does it for you.
  • Publish the direct IP and port alongside the server name, so members always have the fallback that works while the browser catches up.

If you are still choosing where to run the server itself, our guide to The Isle server hosting covers Evrima requirements, slot sizing and what a managed setup handles for you.
