The Isle Server Hosting vs Self-Hosting
For a small Evrima group, both options can work. Self-hosting saves the monthly rental bill but leaves one person responsible for SteamCMD, port forwarding, updates, backups and a machine that stays online. A managed The Isle server hosting plan costs more than “free,” but moves those jobs to the provider and gives the group a stable place to play.
The current managed entry plan is $1199 for 10 slots and 8 GB RAM. Treat that as a live price, not a hard-coded quote: the checkout can show a different currency or billing discount.

What self-hosting The Isle really requires
Self-hosting is reasonable when one administrator already has a machine that runs continuously and knows how to maintain it. The installation still needs a little discipline. The Evrima dedicated server setup guide covers the commands, but the short version is:
- Install the dedicated-server app with SteamCMD and select
-beta evrima. - Keep the player client and server on the same branch and build after every update.
- Set
Game.iniandEngine.ini, then read the server log after the first boot. - Forward the assigned ports, check the firewall and test both the browser and a direct connection.
- Stop cleanly before copying saves, and keep a backup that you have actually restored once.
The developer's Steam server-branch announcement shows the evrima branch used for Gateway servers and gives server-owner configuration examples. That is why an old Legacy install is not a substitute for an Evrima server: the two sides must agree on the branch.
When a managed server is the better fit
Renting makes sense when the group wants to play while the owner is away, when nobody wants to expose a home network, or when patch-day maintenance would otherwise become a recurring chore. It is also the simpler choice for a public community: the server needs consistent uptime, a known region, enough headroom for evening peaks, and a recovery path when a build or configuration change goes wrong.
Do not choose only by the advertised slot count. Our Evrima performance guide explains why AI density and peak population affect CPU and memory. Around 25 private slots is an 8 GB starting point; a 50-slot public community usually wants 12 GB; 100 slots with AI needs at least 16 GB and observation before further scaling.
Choose by responsibility, not by the word “free”
- Self-host if the group is small, the machine and upload are already available, and one person genuinely wants to own updates, networking and backups.
- Rent a private server if friends need an always-on world without depending on the host's PC, and a 10-slot entry plan fits the group.
- Rent a public server if the community needs predictable capacity, a data-centre connection, managed patching and a tested restore path.
- Wait and test if nobody can own either the maintenance work or the monthly bill. A server that no one looks after will be unreliable under both models.
