The Isle Unofficial Servers: How to Choose One, and the Settings Behind It

"What server is the best?" is the most argued question in The Isle community, and the answers disagree because the servers genuinely differ. Two of them can run the same build of Evrima and feel like different games: one grows your animal in an evening and the other takes a week, one fills the island with AI prey and the other has none, one runs voice chat and the other bans it. This page lists the choices that actually separate servers, what to look for before you commit hours of growth to one, and which of those choices are plain server settings you can run for your own group.

The seven things that separate servers

ChoiceWhy players careHow to check before you grow there
Growth rateCommunities settle on 1x for a slow, high-stakes life, or 2x to 3x so a lost adult is an evening and not a week. Players who ask for "1x growth, mandatory" and players who want 3x are not looking for the same server.The rate is normally in the server's rules post or website. If it is not stated, grow a juvenile for thirty minutes and compare the percentage with a friend on a known 1x server.
AI animalsAI is prey, and on some servers the only reliable prey. "No AI" servers push carnivores to hunt players, which some communities want and others hate.Stated in the rules, and obvious within ten minutes of playing a carnivore.
Voice chatVoice makes coordination easy and harassment easy. A share of players will only join servers where it is off.Rules post. Some servers run voice through their own Discord instead of in game.
Rules and enforcementRules against mix-packing, killing hatchlings or camping spawns need active moderation. A busy server with a large rulebook and two staff is a rulebook nobody enforces.Read the rules, then look at how recent the moderation log or ban announcements are, if the community publishes them.
Live map and trackersMany communities run a website with a live map that shows you and your group, a prime tracker and player stats. Some give it away, some charge a monthly fee for it. Players are divided on paying for a server feature at all.Visit the community site before joining. A map behind a paywall is a fact about the server, not a fault in the game; the game itself has no live map.
Region and populationA packed server in the wrong region means a queue at peak and rubber banding all night. An empty one means no prey, no threat and no reason to log in.Check the browser at your own evening peak, not at noon. Note the queue length, not only the player count.
Balance and species listServers can restrict which species are playable and tune the mix. A server known as "herbivore friendly" got that reputation from its settings and its rules together.Playable species show in the character selection on that server. The rest is in the rules post.

Do not install a server's custom .exe. Some communities ask players to run a program of their own alongside the game, for voice, tracking or "enhancements". Nothing in The Isle requires this: the game connects, plays and tracks your animal without any outside program, and every live map worth using runs in a browser. A program you cannot inspect, running while you play, is a risk you are taking on behalf of the people who wrote it, whatever their intentions. If a server will not let you in without it, that is your answer about the server.

The same choices, as server settings

Every row in that table is a decision the server operator made in Game.ini or in their community rules. If you run a server for your own group, you make the same decisions once and never argue about them again. The keys below are the ones the current Evrima server build reads, and the ones the developers documented in their patch notes; the full section-by-section walk-through is in the Game.ini configuration guide.

[/Script/TheIsle.TIGameSession]
MaxPlayerCount=30
bServerPassword=true
bServerWhitelist=false
bSpawnAI=true
AISpawnInterval=40
bEnableDiets=true
bEnableMigration=true
bEnablePatrolZones=true
bEnableMutations=true
AllowedClasses=Hypsilophodon
AllowedClasses=Carnotaurus
  • Growth rate is the server's growth multiplier. Leave it at 1 for the vanilla pace or raise it for a casual group; every community that advertises "2x" or "3x" is describing this one number.
  • AI is bSpawnAI, with AISpawnInterval controlling how quickly it is replenished. Turning AI off is cheaper for the server and harder for carnivores.
  • Diets, migration and patrol zones are the three survival systems most rules posts argue about. A relaxed private server often turns migration off so people can settle in one place.
  • Species is AllowedClasses, one line per species. Omit the line to allow everything.
  • Mutations are on by default; a server can switch them off or hand-tune each one. What that changes for the player is covered in mutations and entombing explained.
  • Password and whitelist are how a friends-only server stays friends-only. Setup is in password and whitelist setup.

The Game.ini Generator writes a complete file from these choices, and the Server Doctor reads an existing file and log and points out combinations that hurt, such as high slots together with dense AI.

What a small group actually needs

A private server for a pack of eight does not need the hardware a hundred-slot community runs. Ten slots on 8 GB of RAM is a comfortable starting point, and the sizing table in server performance, slots and AI shows where the next steps are. The server does not change what each player's PC needs, which is in The Isle system requirements. The trade-off between renting that and running it at home is in server hosting vs self-hosting. The developers publish their patch notes and dev blogs on the official The Isle news page; check it before an update day, because servers and clients on different versions stop seeing each other.
