Unturned Maps Compared 2026: Which Map to Pick for Your Server
Unturned has more official and curated maps than almost any other survival game, and picking the right one for your server is the single biggest decision a new admin makes. The wrong choice means a sparse server (too big), a chaotic server (too small), an exhausted server (no questline progression), or a stale one (your group finished the content in a weekend). This guide compares every major map in 2026, ranked by what kind of community each one actually serves best.
For map-switching mechanics on a live server, see our server configuration guide. For the specific map articles, this overview cross-links each one as you scroll.

Vanilla Maps (Shipped with the Base Game)
PEI
The original map. Small (2km x 2km), beginner-friendly, low loot density. Quests are minimal. Almost every Unturned player starts here, which means it is also the map most veteran groups skip. Use it for: brand-new players, casual sessions, low-spec server testing. Server load is the lowest of any official map.
Washington
Medium-large (4km x 4km), urban + forest balance, good loot density. The default "next map after PEI" for most groups. Quest content is moderate. Server load is medium. Works for 8-12 player groups without strain.
Yukon
Snow biome, large but sparse, harsh survival mechanics (cold damage, limited shelter). Loot density is lower than Washington. Server load is low because the open terrain has fewer rendered objects. Best for hardcore survival groups who want environmental pressure to do the work that zombies normally do.
Russia
4km x 4km, dense military bases, strong PvP layout. The default PvP map for veteran communities. Russia's military bases are popular raid targets, and "best base locations" is one of the highest-search queries because base placement determines survival rate. Server load is medium-high due to dense object spawns.
Germany
4km x 4km, mid-sized cities, strong quest content. "Germany map secrets" is a recurring search because the map hides several non-obvious quest items. Less popular than Russia but a strong second choice for groups that want PvE quests with optional PvP. Server load is medium.
Hawaii
Tropical, multi-island layout. Heavy boat and aircraft use because of island separation. Niche but well-regarded. Server load is medium because water rendering is cheap.
France
European urban map, rare loot tier, balanced size. Mid-tier popularity. Server load is medium-high.
Carpat
Eastern European mountain map, vertical terrain, strong atmospheric design. Server load is medium. Mid-tier popularity.
Greece
Mediterranean coastal map, good for mixed PvE / PvP. Server load is medium.
Curated Maps (Workshop-Featured, Officially Supported)
Arid
Desert survival map. Water management is a primary game mechanic; rivers are scarce. "Food and water guide" is one of the top searches for Arid players specifically. For map progression and the loot tiers, see our Arid map progression guide. Server load is medium because vegetation is sparse.
Elver
Heavily quest-driven map with the recent map revamp. Strong storyline, lots of NPCs, hidden objectives. The questline is roughly 20-30 hours for a typical group. See our Elver revamp hosting article for the current server-side considerations. Server load is medium-high due to NPC density.
Kuwait (Buak)
Middle Eastern setting, quest-heavy, multi-stage achievements. Notable for the chemical-collection quests; admins occasionally hit the "chemicals not counting" bug when running this on a hosted server. The map also has substantial hidden locations and secrets for groups that complete the main questline. The "Eye" quest and "Establishing a Connection" quest are recurring search topics. Server load is medium.
California 2
2026's flagship map revamp. American west coast, urban density, high loot tier. The most-asked-about new map of the year by query volume. For admin configuration see our California 2 admin guide and for the gameplay layout our map guide. Server load is high; California 2 needs more RAM than older maps because of urban density.
Escalation
Recent map with strong combat focus. Features a bomb-defuse quest mechanic ("escalation bomb defuse" is a common search). The questline has "raiding guide" specifics that overlap with PvP play. Mid-to-high server load.
A6 Polaris
Hardcore survival map. Multi-stage expedition design ("A6 Polaris Xpedition 3" is a popular content tag). Recommended for veteran groups; the difficulty curve is significantly higher than Elver or Kuwait. Server load is medium.
Map Selection by Server Type
For PvE-Only Servers
Pick Elver, Kuwait, or California 2. All three have substantial questline content that gives your players a multi-week progression goal. Configure PvP off in server settings and lock claim flags to group-only.
For PvP Servers
Russia and Germany are the proven choices. Both have dense military bases, good base-defense options, and the kind of loot distribution that pushes players toward conflict over the same locations. Escalation also works for PvP-heavy groups.
For Roleplay Servers
Washington or Germany. The urban layouts give roleplay groups recognizable city geography (gas stations, residential streets, downtown) that lend themselves to in-character storytelling. Avoid the smallest (PEI) and most extreme (Yukon, A6 Polaris) maps for RP.
For Crossplay (PC + Console)
Console clients support a subset of maps. PEI, Russia, Washington, and Hawaii are the safest choices. Newer maps like California 2 and Escalation may not be on console yet; check your console build version before committing. See our console crossplay guide for current compatibility.
For Hardcore Survival Servers
A6 Polaris and Arid are the two hardest official map experiences. Yukon adds environmental pressure. Combine with hard mode and PvP-disabled friendly fire and you have the genre's highest-difficulty configuration.

Switching Maps Mid-Server-Life
"Dedicated server how to change map" is the second-most-asked admin question after "how to add mods". The mechanic itself is straightforward: edit the `Commands.dat` file (see our commands.dat configuration) to change the `Map` directive, restart the server, and the new map loads on next boot. The non-obvious part is what happens to player saves:
- Player data is map-specific. Switching maps means players start fresh.
- If you want to preserve old map data for a future return, take a server backup before switching. See backup and restore guide.
- Some plugins require map-specific config; check plugin compatibility before switching.
For groups that finish a map's questline and want to migrate to a new map without losing progression, the standard pattern is: take a full backup, label it with the old map name, wipe the save (see server wipe guide), switch the map directive, and start fresh on the new map.
What's Next for Unturned Maps
The Unturned roadmap continues to add curated maps roughly every 2-3 months. Following the official Workshop's curated tag is the most reliable way to spot new maps before they hit the search-trend curve. When a new map lands, server admins typically wait 1-2 weeks for the early bugs to settle before migrating live servers.
Ready to Pick a Map and Launch?
The right map for your group depends on the group, but a 24/7 server lets you keep the world running while everyone figures out their preferences. Supercraft Unturned hosting ships with every official map pre-installed, one-click map switching, automatic backups so a map switch is reversible, and the hardware tier to run California 2 at full player cap without the lag that kills urban-dense maps on cheaper hosts.
