Wurm Unlimited Server Setup: Maps, Rates and Mods for a World That Lasts

No game rewards a well-founded server like Wurm. Terraforming, roads, deeds and villages are the work of months, communities run the same world for years - and the decisions you make on day one are the ones everyone lives with. This guide covers those decisions in the order they arrive.

First, the naming trap: Online vs Unlimited

Half of all Wurm server searches confuse two different products. Wurm Online is the MMO on official servers - you cannot host it, rent it or mod it. Wurm Unlimited is the standalone version made for exactly that: your own world, your map, your rates, your rules. Everything below is about Unlimited.

Worth knowing before you invest: Wurm Unlimited is a mature, settled game that no longer receives updates. For server owners this is genuinely double-edged - no new content, but also no patch-day breakage, ever. The world you found this year behaves identically in three years, which is part of why Wurm communities last as long as they do.

The map decision

The map is the founding act, and it drives both character and cost:

  • Stock maps work fine for a small group that wants to start today.
  • Custom maps are Wurm's treasure: the community mapmaking scene produces hand-crafted worlds, and uploading one is how most serious servers begin. The map goes into the server's folder before first launch.
  • Size drives RAM: roughly 4 GB for a small 1024 map, 6 GB for the classic 2048 community map, 12 GB for a large 4096 world with mods. Memory follows map size and accumulated world data - terrain changes, items, deeds - far more than player count.

The founding rates (choose like it is a constitution)

Wurm's server settings define what kind of life the game is, and communities treat them as permanent:

  • Skill gain rate - 1x is the pilgrim's road; community servers commonly run 3x-10x. Players plan months around this number.
  • Action timer multiplier - how fast digging, chopping and crafting resolve; together with skill gain it sets the server's tempo.
  • Starting characteristics and skills - how established a newcomer begins.
  • PvP or PvE, deed costs, upkeep - the social contract of the world.

You can change any of these later. Serious servers almost never do, because changing the constitution mid-world is how communities fracture. Decide deliberately, announce clearly, then leave them alone.

Mods: the standard loader

Wurm Unlimited has a long-standing community mod scene built around the standard server mod loader, which patches the launcher and reads mods from its mods folder - each mod configured by a small properties file. The staples on most long-running servers are quality-of-life and crafting mods; because the base game no longer changes, a working mod stack tends to keep working, which is a luxury no other modded game offers.

Operations for a world that intends to last

  • Backups are the whole job. The server folder - world database, map, configs - is the save. In a game where a village represents a year of evenings, backup cadence is the most important setting you will choose.
  • Java memory: the server is a Java application; give it the heap the map deserves and it stays boring, which is what you want.
  • Uptime beats everything: a Wurm community's rhythm is daily; a server that vanishes for weekends loses its village.

If you would rather the Java flags, backups and uptime were someone else's job while the map, rates and mods stay entirely yours, that is what a managed Wurm Unlimited server is for.
