Wurm Unlimited Server Hosting - Worlds That Run for Years
No game rewards a permanent server like Wurm. Terraforming, roads, deeds and villages are the work of months, and a managed Wurm Unlimited dedicated server is what keeps that work alive: your map, your skill rates, your mods, running around the clock with backups you never have to think about.
- Persistent world
- Your skill rates
- Map upload
- FTP access

Wurm Unlimited server requirements
Wurm's server is a Java application whose appetite tracks the map, not the moment: a bigger map with more terraformed terrain, deeds and items means more memory held permanently, regardless of who is online tonight. Sizing by map is therefore the honest way to plan.
| World | RAM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small map (1024) | 4 GB | A village of friends |
| Medium map (2048) | 6 GB | The classic community size |
| Large map (4096), modded | 12 GB | Public worlds, years of accumulation |
Wurm Unlimited is a mature, settled game - no surprise patches, no meta churn - which is precisely why its servers age so well: the world you found this year is still the world in three years, plus everything your players built in between.
Wurm Unlimited server setup
On a managed plan you choose a map and the core rules, and the world comes up ready to join. Two paths for the map:
- Start from a stock map and let the terrain history be written by your players.
- Upload a custom map over FTP - Wurm's community mapmaking scene is one of its treasures, and a hand-crafted map is the usual founding act of a serious server.
The world database, the map and the configs all live in your server folder: it is all yours, it all comes with FTP, and it is all captured by the automatic backups.
Wurm Unlimited server settings
Wurm's server settings are famous because they change what kind of life the game is:
- Skill gain rate - 1x is the pilgrim's road; community servers commonly run 3x-10x. Set once, at founding, and players plan their years around it.
- Action timer multiplier - how fast digging, chopping and crafting resolve. Together with skill gain it defines the server's tempo.
- Characteristics and starting skills - how established a newcomer begins.
- PvP or PvE, deed costs, upkeep - the social contract of the world.
All of it is editable in the panel; the founding values are worth choosing deliberately, because a Wurm community treats them as constitution rather than config.
Wurm Unlimited server mods
Wurm Unlimited has a long-standing community mod scene built around the standard server mod loader. On our plans the loader can be set up for you, and mods are installed over FTP with their properties files editable in the panel - quality-of-life changes, crafting additions, economy tools, the classics that most long-running servers carry. We back up before any change, so experimenting with a mod list is reversible.
Wurm Online vs Wurm Unlimited
They share a world and an ancestry but they are different products. Wurm Online is the MMO, run on official servers - it cannot be self-hosted. Wurm Unlimited is the standalone version made exactly so that communities can run their own worlds: your map, your rates, your mods, your rules. If you want a Wurm world that belongs to you and your players, Unlimited is the one, and this page is its hosting.
FAQ
Can I host a Wurm Online server?
No - Wurm Online is the MMO and runs only on official servers. Wurm Unlimited is the self-hostable version, built for exactly this: private and community worlds with their own maps, rates and mods.
How much RAM does a Wurm Unlimited server need?
4 GB serves a small 1024 map, 6 GB the classic 2048 community map, and 12 GB a large 4096 world with mods. Memory tracks map size and accumulated world data more than player count.
Can I upload a custom map?
Yes, over FTP - custom maps are half the point of Wurm Unlimited, and a hand-made map is how most serious servers begin.
Do server mods work?
Yes. The standard community mod loader is supported, mods install over FTP with editable configs, and every change is preceded by an automatic backup.
Can I change skill rates after founding?
Technically yes, at any time. Socially, a Wurm community treats founding rates as the world's constitution - most servers set them once and never touch them, which is worth a moment's thought before launch.
